KDE - the leading open source desktop project, has unveiled its brand new offering, the Plasma Active One - a rather impressive touchscreen user-interface aimed at tablet computers, smartphones, and other gadgets such as smart TVs, set top boxes, in-vehicle infotainment etc.
The Plasma Active One is a KDE 4.x style interface and application programming interface (API) that has been specifically for designed for touch devices.
According to its creators, the Plasma Active One is, up to a great extent, based upon the concept of ‘Activities’. The home screen features a handful of widgets, which users can fill up with various application shortcuts, images, browser-bookmarks, or even more advanced and interactive widgets such as real-time weather update and forecasts, etc.
KDE also claims that users can organise all documents, contacts, apps, website, media etc. belonging to the same class in Activities, thus eventually enabling themselves to come up with a highly efficient virtual desktop, usable for a wide range of purposes.

“(The Plasma Active is) certainly meant as a replacement for iOS and Android, a completely open, community-driven project with strong backing by a group of (SMB-sized) businesses,” Sebastian Kügler, one of Plasma Active’s leading developers Plasma Active sid, ZDNet reports.
“The feedback so far was very good, and the concepts seem to appeal with potential partners. There is definitely demand for an open system without lock-in in the market for devices,” he added.
