    Chicken Treat Restaurant

Does anyone remember Chicken Treat restaurants? They appeared then disappeared in Bangkok a few years back; I believe the franchise originates in Australia (?).

    Way better than KFC, imho.

Anyway, does anyone know the recipe, or exactly how they cooked their chicken? It was roasted but a bit sweet, with a wonderful stuffing inside (plus gravy and coleslaw, etc.) I want to make this at home.

    Cheers

Looks a bit like teriyaki sauce...stuffing? I copped out and bought a bottle of Kikkoman teriyaki bake and glaze recently. Wash the chicken, pat dry and brush or slap the sauce on both sides. Let it marinate in the fridge for a few hours.
Heat the oven to 375 F. Wrap the chuck skin side down in tin foil (ensure it's sealed). Cook for 20 min. Undo foil bag and turn skin side up. Re-seal and cook another 20 minutes. Turn on the broiler and get the chuck up close. Undo the foil and let the chuck get crispy. About 5 minutes. Oh, make sure you have a pan under the bag coz it leaks. Saves on mess cleanup.

Remember them well, bloody excellent Chicken, grilled not fried stuff and the stuffing
This caused the breakdown in relationship between Minor group and Pizza hut. PH wouldn't allow Bull Heinke to go ahead with the chicken treat and when he did they took the Franchise off him so he started Pizza company.
I dunno why the plug was pulled on Chicken Treat, it seemed to be doing well enough.

He didnt invest enough into Chicken Treat. Franchise fees were too high and the locations picked were poor. It was run at a loss for about 6-8 months with a '2 for 1' type promotion. But when it went back to full price the customers disappeared.

They also suffered from the other problem of running a fast food joint here - all the outlets closed at 10pm. I dont know if that was a licensing issue at the time or something, but there's a huge market in people coming home from the bars who fancy a takeaway (of the edible variety ).

Pity It was far better than KFC.

There was one around the corner from me in Phra Kha Nong, soi 71. Yup, the 2-for-1 was like a gift from the falang food gods, I couldn't believe my good fortune: 5 min. walk from home! Bloody hell. But it was too good to last, I suppose... and in totally the wrong neighborhood. Too bad, the staff were very friendly, too, and it was cheap...

I think they're called 'Red Rooster' in Australia. Used to be called 'Big Rooster' back before I left in '91. Was one of my favourie takeaways then. Tried it last year when I came back and it tastes like shit now.

I think your wrong there Joey mate, it was a franchise from WA, not seen it in the East but very popular with the sand gropers.
Anyway it was a great pity that it disappeared as even at full price it was good treat a couple of times a week. But as someone said I think Bill just didn't invest near enough and he had quite crappy locations.
Most where poor performing ex Pizza hut locations, if he had a few good sites in Pattaya, low numbers in Sukumvit, Silom etc it would have had legs, but Soi 71 etc won't work easily.
Your Right about Red Rooster tho, used to be great but last time I tried it, absolute crap.

Edit, Your partly right Joey, from wiki
Chicken Treat is an Australian barbecue chicken fast food chain that originated in Perth, Western Australia and later expanded throughout Australia.
In early 2002, the parent company Australian Fast Foods purchased Red Rooster, the main rival of Chicken Treat.[1] This was followed by a period of rebranding, changing existing stores outside of Western Australia from Chicken Treat to the more established Red Rooster brand.

It's a SECRET, with one hundred and eleven different herbs and spices .

(I'd guess Jet is right, essentially if not exactly.)

Are you planning to start up a place here called Kicken Tleat, or something ?

Chicken Treat is the biggest cooked chook chain in Western Australia, 2nd biggest is Red Rooster who is actually owned by Chicken Treat but they trade as two different names so people think they are competitive.

The same bloke also owns the WA soccer (known as football in the rest of the world) team - Perth Glory.

I worked for them 15 yrs ago when still at school, I can't remember anything special other than they cooked a dozen at a time in a big rotisserie so the fat dripped and they cooked evenly, can't remember what we used to bast then in but sorry.

The basted roast from the market tastes just fine, without 101 herbs and spices, thanks.

At the front of the housing estate I used to live in, the was a night market three nights a week. There was a Muslim-style-chicken stall there which did really tasty chicken. Their khao nieo had fried onion with it. The chicken was always moist and tender (just like Chicken Treat/Big Rooster/Red Rooster used to be) but didn't have the stuffing. Otherwise an excellent substitute !!

There is a Muslim stall in the Tepprasit market which does chicken the same style. It's down the end on the Sukhumvit Rd side of the food market. Be early because it's very popular with the Thais and usually sells out early.

I remember that when it was in the news here before. I think because they (minor group) already had the license for KFC, and there was a conflict of interest.

Whatever, the chicken was really good. Damn shame the Treat deal didn't work here.

There used to be one near the Emporium when I lived on Soi 22. Great feed if you cant be bothered to cook anything, then they go and change it to a Pizza shop or some bollocks. Usually happens to stuff I like.

Oh, is that because the address doesnt have the 'www' at the start? How did Cimboc see it? I suppose he could have looked at the properties and found it that way.

Well let me tell you - the pic is huge!
