Nutritional and Diet Myth Buster Time

This thread is to bust all the nutritional and diet myths out there. There is so much crap on the web that I have weeded through that has been totally proven false.

Sorry, don't ask me for links, as this is a compilation of internet, magazine and book research that I have done.

Myth #1 - Don't eat to much fruit because fruits are all sugar. You will get fat and develop diabetes.

Fruit will not make a person gain unwanted pounds of fat. It is the amount of calories you consume that make you fat. Fruits are chock full of nutrients, vitamins, antioxidants, phytonutrients and fiber and only contain 4 to 7grams of NATURAL sugar per serving. It would take a ton of fruit for it to cause you "sugar: problems.

Eat fruit and plenty of it! I am eating 5 to 8 servings a day and still losing inches. I am watching my calories more than watching what I stick in my gob.

    Myth number 2

Eating carbohydrates in the evenings makes you fat.

Not rue. Eating carbohydrates at night is a-ok. Again the amount of calories a person consumes is what determines with loss and weight gain. If you eat 500 calories more a day than your body needs, then you put weight on and if you eat 500 calories less then you will drop weight. Also eating carbohydrates at night. Carbs have a lot of anti-catabolic properties that should not be cut out and any time of the day.

Anti-Catabolism definition - is the halting of cellular breakdown in the body. Slowing the breakdown of protein makes it easier to put on new muscle.

    I disagree strongly!

Fruit don't make fat, that may be right. But if I eat fruit, the sugar makes me HUNGRY! If I am hungry I eat. With fruit my weight goes through the roof in no time. So I eat very little fruit.

People react differently to food. Dietary teaching does not take that into account.

I eat it quite a bit. Again it is all about calorie maintenance. I have doe all the diet fads and just watch my calories now. I have found that if I consume a few less calories than I require, then I lose a little weight. If I consume a lot less, I lose a lot more. It works the opposite weigh.

My friend lost 65 pounds and he eats a lot of the "forbidden foods". he just watches his caloric intake.

    Myth # 3

Low fat /high protein / high carbohydrates diets or the other lie high Protein / high Fat diets

The healthiest choice is a well rounded diet made up of three basics - protein, carbohydrates and fats. These extreme only diets are extremely difficult to stick to and if you lose weight with them it is because you are eating less calories. Again, your body needs the above three to function at its best. if you want to lose your gut, cut CALORIES!

If I cut breads out I do feel much better. Dead animals, veges and fruit are all we need really.

Fruits are acidic and not really such a 'healthy' option.

Better get your mins and vits from raw veges.

    Myth # 4

    Eggs give you high cholesterol

This is not true and this myth came from the truthful fact that eggs do happen to contain the highest concentrated amount of cholesterol than any other food.

What they fail to tell you is that eggs do not contain enough cholesterol to cause you any trouble if you eat them in moderation. They also fail to let you know that eggs are a great source of vital nutrients.

I agree about the veg, but fruit is a good source of sugar, the natural type.

Myth # 5 Saturated fat in the form of animal meat ids the biggest contributor to heart disease.

Saturated animal fat has been around long before the jump in heart disease. It is trans-fatty acids and hydrogenated fats that are the problem causers. They are found in shortening, refined cooking oils and margarine. This along with the refined sugar consumption craze of the modern world is the real culprit of of today's rise in heart disease.

    Good news!!

Using real butter and olive oil is much healthier.

Go chow on a steak at Timbas!!

    Myth # 6

Myth: It is bad to eat between meals

The truth is you need to eat something every 3 - 4 hours also eat two or three snacks. This will help to keep you well fueled throughout the day and lalso curb your appetite. Choose snacks like fruit, vegetables, nuts, salads or nutiton bars to add to your day’s total intake of vital vitamins and minerals.

    Myth # 7

Myth: A fat free diet is good for you

False and besides its nearly impossible to achieve. It is also is not good for you.

Dietary fats are needed to carry fat soluble vitamins. Also, a group of nutrients called essential fatty acids, found in plant and fish oils, are absolutely crucial for health. They are needed by every cell membrane in our body to help make them watertight and are vital for the functioning not only of the brain, but also for controlling the production of prostaglandins, hormone-like substances that control several functions all over the body. Research has shown that they are be able to dampen down symptoms of inflammatory problems like rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis and to be important in the health or our heart and joints.

    myth # 8

Drinking diet soda and using artificial sweeteners helps control weight.

Artificial sweeteners stimulate your digestive system receptors, causing the brain to go into “eating mode”. However, with no food present, the body is not satisfied and the appetite powerfully craves real calories.

Instead of using artificial sweeteners, try using honey, herb sweeteners, fruit, or natural, raw sugar to sweeten your food.

Stroller, doesn't this make sense though? A balanced diet balances the acidity levels in your body.

I looked around and came up with site
    Don’t Eat Fruit!

Here is a quote from the site - but as I said above fruit is not full of sugar.

Sounds outlandish, I know. But it is true. If you are serious about alkalising your body then you simply have to cut fruit from your diet. The reason?
Fruit is absolutely packed with sugar.

    the Meaty Bites Diet

I've got 2 dogs. I selected a large bag of Meaty Bites at Woolworths
and was standing in line at the check-out.

A woman behind me asked if I had a dog.

On impulse, I told her that no, I was starting The Meaty Bites Diet
again, although I probably shouldn't because I'd ended up in the
hospital last time, but that I'd lost 25 kgs before I woke in an
intensive care ward with tubes coming out of most of my orifices and
    IV's in both arms.

I told her that it was essentially a perfect diet and that the way
that it works is to load your pants pockets with Meaty Bites and
simply eat one or two every time you feel hungry & that the food is
nutritionally complete so I was going to try it again.

I have to mention here that practically everyone in the line was by
now enthralled with my story, particularly a guy who was behind her.

Horrified, she asked if I'd ended up in the hospital in that condition
because I had been poisoned by the food. I told her no, it was because
I'd been sitting in the middle of the road licking my dick and a car
    hit me.

I thought one guy was going to have a heart attack he was laughing so
hard as he staggered out the door.

Stupid cow...why else would I buy dog food??
If you torture data for enough time , you can get it to say what you want.

This claim has been on and off many times. I really don't know what is true there. I do know that artificial sweeteners have been used in the food of pigs to make them grow faster.

Honey is fruit sugar like in so many fruit as opposed to the ordinary sugar we buy in the shops. Fruit sugar is app. twice as sweet as ordinary sugar, but some people have digestive problems if they take in too much of it. Lately much food has been around advertised as containing fruit sugar instead of ordinary sugar. Fruit sugar sounds so natural, but it is not really such a good idea.

This site seems off completely. The body is able to balance its acid or alkalinity level perfectly unless you go off on absolutely extreme diets.

Yes! Yes! Yes! I like butter too. And I use vegetable oil instead of margarine for frying because of the hydrogenated fats.

Hydrogenated fats are not as bad as they used to be though!

A short history of that: Margarine was invented as a replacement for scarce butter. But vegetable fats are almost completely liquids. The only exception I know of is the fat of Coconuts.

To harden them they were hydrogenated until they were hard enough. The problem was that by hydrogenating them transfatty acids were produced in large amounts and those are really harmful.

The production process has however later been changed. Oil is now hydrogenated to saturation. In this process the transfatty acids are eliminated. The hardened fat is then mixed with oil to the desired softness. So they are no longer as bad as they used to be. Margarine should be ok.

But I have heard claims that in products like cookies and chips sometimes the old dangerous variant is still used because cheaper.

^I've recently learned how palm oil has been unjustly vilified.

In fact it's quite healthy and has similar oleic acid content as olive oil.
