Thread: Granite Tiles.

I have checked the threads on construction and cannot find anything on the price of granite.
So I decided to submit this one.

I am building a house in Phetchabun I was wondering what the price of granite is in Thailand, as I am stuck in the Middle East and cannot price it myself. The wife got a

I think it depends on the quality of the granite. I seem to remember reading somewhere that they paid about 650thb sq mtr, I may be wrong though.

I think we paid about 950Thai Bht/ sq. Metre for ours, in the end, but don't quote me on this. Price vairies with colour but, if you have the money in your hand, it's down to the haggling.

It will be a lot cheaper going to a place and selecting your own, than ordering it through any Builder.

I know marble is porous but never known granite to be, I have granite counter tops in my kitchen as many other people do. My granite is black but I have seen it offered in many different colors that could show stains. If it stained wouldn't that make it a poor choice for kitchen counter tops?

Already got the the dog, I think the wife said the tiles are 12X12.

I'd be interested in your reasoning for wanting to go with a granite tile floor. Arn't they more expensive? more difficult to clean than the smooth ceremaic tiles? What's the attraction to granite tiles?

The standard gray granite is very cheap in Thailand when you start looking at different colors is when the price jumps.

It is very durable for flooring but make sure whoever sets it is very experienced and gets the corners flush and level with each other as there are no grout lines and the walking on uneven tiles will slice your toes open

Sorry Khun NickA, I don't buy either one of those alibis that you mention... A properly layed out and installed grade "A" floor tile with the minimum grout area between the tiles looks mighty good and as far as the cleaning thing, granite is more pourous, retians stain marks, and is less freindly to the mop and broom.... so I'm advised by the Mrs.... I'm still a fan of good tile for the living areas in the kitchen and living room and bedrooms....

I agree wit NickA it does look good. I may try and change the wifes mind though just checked on the net about cleaning and it takes a lot of effort to keep clean, may just go with the granite work top and grade A tiles on the floor. What is the cost of a grade A tile in LOS.

Matter of preference like so many other things Khun Sri Thep, but good decision none the less to go with grade A tiles. Cost is variable based on manufacturer, size, color and what might be on sale. Pricing as I recall is usually by the sq meter. Lots of choices available and frequently on sale.

Well Sea Traveler, talked to the wife yesterday and asked her to price the grade A tiles and to forget the granite did not understand what she said accept

No sir. Not confused at all. I clearly know and can recognize the difference. None the less, it might very well be that all I've seen in the houses in thailand where granite was used that it was in fact a lower grade tile layed by a non-professional. I maintain my opinion as I have yet to see a granite floor that I would trade for my ceremic tiled floor.

I was wondering when you were going to chime in Khun a. boozer... I would suggest to you that if granite is cooler than lets say ceramic tile when it is layed on the floor, the difference would be small to the point of not being able to be distinguished. Except possibly by a finely tuned thermometer. I would offer that if I were ever to have a granite tiled floor, I'd want to have the largest sizes as I could possibly get to limit the grout lines.

In the end, I think again it is just a matter of preference. A well layed ceramic tile floor that is of a good grade of tile, is a nice color, and is kept clean can look as eloquent as the most expensive floor.

obviously it would be the same temperature!

however, as the thermal qualities differ, a stone floor does feel cooler than a tiled one, which, in turn, feels cooler than a wooden one

as for your comments SEATr, that is your preference and a tiled floor can be very nice. I also like large slabs, not because of the "grout lines" but it looks better, as do large ceramic tiles

my preference is stone; for me it has qualities that ceramic cannot emulate. In addition, when laid properly, the joins are hardly noticeable.
