What about Reagan he needed a work horse VP in the shape of GH Bush to ease electorate worries about his age and quickly degenerating mental health.
One point to add about VP picks, are that a certain percentage of VPs become Presidents, historically.

If George H. Bush was not chosen by Reagan as his VP, would G.H. Bush have become President? Speculation, but not likely, IMO.

And then the former President GHB has his son GWB on a Presidential family platform.

Many people think Reagan's biggest mistake was choosing G.H. Bush as VP over, Laxalt.
