Is there a right to "hate" America ?

Quite a few of our resident Americans seem to believe that Brits, and Old Euros do not have the right to criticize or hate their country, and that this privilege should only be reserved to Americans only

Is that true for every country ? should this only be a right reserved to its citizens ?

    You're losing it Butterfly.

Of course you have the right to hate anything you wish.

It's the point where you start spouting untruths and invectives and stating opinions as fact, in order to support your hate, that you feel the opposition.

Just as if I said, "All Frogs are boy-loving ass-bandits." I might experience some blowback. If I stated something benign such as, "France is an insignificant little country with smelly inhabitants," nobody would disagree.

    Hate away.

You have a right to hate America, just like I hate Isaan Som Tam.

Personally, I find the notion of 'hating' a country- particularly one as diverse and pluralistic as the States- a bit nonsensical though.

Does that mean you hate Hollywood movies too? JFK? Big hamburgers? Hula dancers?

    I don't hate the US.

I strongly disapprove of its foreign policy, disapprove of the cynicism of its political system ruled by corporate interests, and am annoyed at the 'frog in a coconut shell syndrome' and uncritical nationalism displayed by many of its inhabitants.

I do like the origins of the US (bar the unfortunate injection of sectarian religious nutjobs who continue to be a nuisance to this day, the ethnic cleansing of native Americans, slavery etc.).

Its constitutional ideas, positive thinking spirit, musical heritage, and many of its fringe artists, free thinkers and dissidents are favourites of mine.

It's not as easy as love or hate. Difficult to grasp though for people who have been brought up to believe that everything is good OR evil, black OR white.

^Cnuts, all of them. The coming socialist world order will send all of those parasites, even if they're dead or fictional, to a gulag where they'll be made to do a decent day's work for the first time in their lives. FACT!

That Kurt Cobain, he imploded in a pique of typical American excess and waste thereby robbing us of future Nirvana releases.

You know, even before I posted that I was thinking to myself: 'I bet someone entirely misses the point of this'.

I was however thinking more along the lines of someone like EmperorTud who seems incapable of recognising a blatant joke when he sees one and in fact has in the past taken them seriously enough to even red them.

I honestly never thought it would be you but oh well, here we be. For shame.

UN Declaration of Human Rights (Original Draft Version, For Distribution in Europe Only):

    Article 1.
    • All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood.
    Article 2.
    • Everyone is entitled to all the rights and freedoms set forth in this Declaration, without distinction of any kind, such as race, colour, sex, language, religion, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth or other status. Furthermore, no distinction shall be made on the basis of the political, jurisdictional or international status of the country or territory to which a person belongs, whether it be independent, trust, non-self-governing or under any other limitation of sovereignty.
    Article 3.
    • Everyone has the right to life, liberty and security of person.
    Article 4.
    • No one shall be held in slavery or servitude; slavery and the slave trade shall be prohibited in all their forms.
    Article 5.
    • No one shall be denied the right to think Americans are cnuts, it's a well known fact anyway. No one shall be denied the right to hate the obese overbearing motherfunkers, I mean, Jesus, who do they think they are, the jumped-up twats! They think rounders is a man's game and they never shut up about how great they are. I mean like, they saved us from Hitler and that, thanks a bunch, but do they have to keep reminding us? Can we make this one compulsory rather than just a right?
