    Huangshan

Huangshan or yellow mountain is a mountain range located in China's southern province of Anhui. The Huangshan mountain range comprises many peaks, 77 of which exceed 1,000m.

The Huangshan Site covers a core area of 154 square kilometres and a buffer zone of 142 square kilometres.

The mountains were formed in the Mesozoic period, about 100 million years ago, when an ancient sea disappeared due to uplift. Later, in the Quaternary period, the landscape was shaped by the influence of glaciers. In many cases, stone pillar forests were formed.

Huangshan has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1990 for its exceptional natural beauty and its role as a habitat for rare and threatened species.

I left Shanghai and took a public bus to the town close to the mountain range.

The new part of town is your average Chinese mess of new concrete buildings, neon signs and lots of traffic and people.

The old part of town however is very nice indeed and this is where I set up camp for the night.

The following morning I headed of for the mountain, It was about another hour on a bus, the bus from Shanghai the day before had taken about 6 or 7 hours.

The treck to the top is done up steep steps, and when I say steep, I mean steep. This is not an undertaking for the unfit. The treck to the hotel at the top takes around 3 hours or so up the east side and about 5+ if you go for the west side. You can be a lazy bastard and take a cable car up if you like but that was not why I was there. I decided on the east.

These poor buggers were bringing supplies up the mountain and taking rubbish etc down, they were extremely fit and had calf muscles that would put a race horse to shame.

Some views are fantastic and some of the pine trees are an amazing shape. This area is very popular with painters.

I spent the night at the top and then took the cable car down the next morning, after that I headed back in to town for another night and some cold beers. The following morning I headed back to Shanghai.

    Some night shots of Shanghai.

This bar belongs to a friend of mine and is worth a look in for a friendly drink and a few games of pool and darts.

This is Jaqui who works behind the bar and has a prety cool dragon tattoo on her back.

There is of course other things to do at night in Shanghai.

I will save that for another thread though.
