Get your wife to show you how to ride it![]()

Shit, I've been watching this thread develop and thinking hey that phantom would be just perfect for me..looking cool with my gray hair sticking out of my helmet..then you say it has a CLUTCH..no automatic!! how the hell can I ride that
Sounds like the wisest answer so far. Maybe even being Thai she can show you how to use your mind sometimes.Originally Posted by Rigger

When approaching the lights I usually downshift and brake. But thats me. I think the general idea is to approach red lights and stay in whatever gear you're currently in. As you brake (Squeeze the lever not grab!!) pull the clutch in. Once at a complete stop put bike into neutral.
Always start in 1st gear. Create good habits from the beginning, Starting in 2nd is not a good idea, as this will only encourage you to slip clutch more thus causing more wear than is neccessary.
Enjoy the ride & keep the shiny side up & rubber side down.

Yes, agreed, I also try to stay with the same good habits!

Travelmate, thanks for the advice.
Another question, when starting the bike, I understand that I have to let it warm up in neutral, do I leave the choke open that whole time?
Unfortunately, my wife doesn't know how to ride a big bike either!
Most of the advice I've been getting is from the bike shop and the neighborhood folks who speak little if any English.
Have found some good links on youtube that show some basics.
thanks again to those with positive posts

Wow you have a manual choke on the bike. I normally start mine without it on my earlier bikes. If engine struggles add a little choke. As engine warms up back it off. Don't want engine screaming all the time. Just try to maintain smooth idle is good enough.Originally Posted by engrin

Why would it not have a manual chokeOriginally Posted by Travelmate
If the bike is running well you shouldnt need it to start the bike with a choke in Thailand.
He's trolling pretty good, seems to have "almost" all the bikers here taking the bate...Originally Posted by Marmite the Dog

Another stupid non troll question...
I guess I should be keeping track of the gears right because there is no display with numbers.
Will the bike go from 6th to first if I gear up? or is 6th the maximum and the only way to go is down.
Any tricks for making it over speed bumps and over small ramps? I tend to stall in those places.
Anyone in the Chonburi / Pattaya area want to give me a lesson? I'd pay for it of course. I need the basics, my wife is scared to ride with me!!

Yep. Gotta step through the gears.Originally Posted by engrin
Why don't you try riding it on a quiet road and work these things out?
^ Not easy to find round here. I live in Chonburi near the Forum

Once you hit 6th, you got to go back down thru the gears.Originally Posted by engrin
Take it slow, try pulling clutch in and coast over the bumps. Then after bump cleared realise clutch and give it a little gas.Originally Posted by engrin
Keep riding the bike it will come as your confidence grows.
