I do despise Pelosi, I'm not a tree hugger. But as a witness to what is going on in the ANWAR area (I spent the better part of a year in AK and visited the protected area after a 3 day background check) I must say they should find other places to drill.

I'm with you but on the fence too, I'm not a tree hugger by a long shot. I spent a couple of weeks floating the Hulahula river. While the area is far from pristine as the natives have been exploiting/trashing the area for thousands of years we can't really trust the oil companies and the fact that the so called "vast arctic plain" isn't nearly as big and vast as they'd lead us to believe.
I'm against it not because of the caribou(in fact caribou thrive around Deadhorse in spite of the oil rigs) but because I hate to see the oil wasted powering cargo 747's full of cheap crap out of China to stock the shelves of local Wallmarts.

I'd say go ahead and drill leaving a small "footprint" but implement some radical conservation practices at the same time such as using small nuclear power stations to replace the diesel power generators in the many villages. Huge amounts of oil are used powering these villages. That and the environmental hazards associated with simply storing the oil in these remote areas should be of concern.

They should expand the development and use of natural gas of which Alaska has huge reserves.

I think one problemo with local drilling is that the US would weaken its ties with OPEC, letting China and India take over. I also thought one idea was to use up all the other guys' oil first and then rely on local sources when that ran out.
