The owner claims there are only two in Thailand and frankly I am surprised there are any.

From the shape of the platform behind the seat I am guessing that this one is an ex UK police bike. Note the hand gear change, probably late 40's early 50's.
The LE Velocette was quite technically advanced for it's time - a horizontally opposed water cooled side valve twin with shaft drive. I have never ridden the Mk 1 with the hand change, but the later version with foot change was a delight to ride, admittedly very little power, but whisper quite, comfortable and with handling well beyond it's power.
Velocette went on to produce two variants to the LE, the first being the Valiant (a standard tubular frame model), and the later Vogue which had twin headlamps and a fiberglass enveloped frame - a very good looking bike, which unfortunately died before being fully developed.

I've been giving the W650 a good fang around the hills the last few days and took the Mrs with me yesterday. Perfect day, perfect road, life is good but as we got close to home the oil light is on! checked the sump sight glass-all good there. WTF?

Gave the sender wire a giggle, no difference. Left it for 15 min and tried it, all ok. I'm using some shell stuff marketed for bikes but only 10w40. Could it be too light for a twin? I'm waiting for a mate to get back who sells Royal Purple 20w50 synthetic which is great stuff and change to that.

Obviously would love to hear any ideas. Hoping it isn't an oil press problem (doesn't seem possible with a full sump no matter what oil is in it) and just the sender. Light wasn't on fully and flickered a couple of times. I will try it again as soon as it stops pissing down.

Rigger, do you still have nitro installed on the TL? If so, does it run well?

and how did you convert to so called unlimited? As I know it. It is a very costly exercise. Hence I got rid of mine.

The restricted version has a small exhaust, different ECU FI module, lower compression, and different cams, if you change all these items, your OK

Yes this is why I was asking.
Sold mine as it was definite not worth the hassle or the costs and let alone finding enough technical talent to do the job properly in Thailand.

Restricted can do only 190km/h, its cuts right there electronically.
I know one company over in Onnut that does these conversions, and it aint that much of a job, and im pleased with it. Took them less than 2 days. Im going at about 290km/h nowadays.
According to the mechanic that i talked to, what they did was:
Minor rewiring at ECU, opening up one of the closed ram air intakes (there are 2, the other is covered with plastic, to be drilled or cut away), replaced 4 pcs of air funnels in airbox to a bigger size.

Thats about it, since i already had a bigger endcan. Bike is like a rocket now, but there might be more to squeeze out of it with new cam's as Peter said, and maybe a Power commander.

On the specific bigbike forums like 1000rr.com, there are instructions on how to d.i.y. A friend has a japanese bigbike magazine on how to do it youself, but not much of help there, obviously, just some pics.

    Peace,
    T

Still you should get rid of it instead of throwing money at it. Too late now those are pretty hard to sell these days.
That plastic intake you mentioned is only for noise emissions at low speeds. It fully opens after a certain RPM. The bigger funnels serve to force a bigger volume of air. Your original ECU will only compensate so far. And with those dodgy wiring u mentioned who knows. Should really fit a power commander to it to have the air/fuel ratio correct. If lean which it might be could cause some damage to the engine. And that will need a rolling road to sort out. Which there is one in Bangkok.
    Take it easy,

At one time the restricted bikes were just speed limited to cut out at 180 kmh but around 2000 they were required to limit power outputs as well. Thats when they had to make engine and CPU mods to make it very difficult to overcome the restrictions, you can overcome them partially, but without a new CPU and other hardware, difficult to get full powere inexpensivly. Can I ask, Who did you use in onnut?

Too late, I fixed it. Had a look at the sender with the multi meter and gave it a good tap with the hammer and it has been working fine since. Looks like I just saved myself 100k baht Panic over. I was so happy I took the airbox out (which is about the size of a football) and popped the k&n's on and re jetted the carbs. It go's better but not as much as I expected....The kit came with a selection of jets so I guess I should try some others. It also came with washers to put under the needle but I may just leave it as it really does go great for a 650. Still pulls from 1000 rpm in 4th with out complaint which is nice as that means I don't have to put my beer between my legs to change up.
