Britain spent $100 on national day


A BRITISH minister has admitted that the Government spent just £230 promoting England's national day over the last five years.

Culture Minister Margaret Hodge confessed her department spent £116 on promoting Saint George's Day this year, £114 in 2007 - and absolutely nothing in the previous three years.


The admission provoked outrage from at least one patriotic member of parliament.


"I think it is a shameful indictment and it needs to be changed,'' said deputy Andrew Rosindell, who is chairman of parliament's all-party Saint George's Day Group.


"We must be the only country in the world that spends nothing or virtually nothing on celebrating its national day. It is a great pity.


"I was expecting it to be low but not that low. Other countries in the world such as Australia and the United States spend a lot of time and effort in promoting their national days and we should be doing more.


"There needs to be a change in the culture of government in the way it approaches something like this.''


Saint George's Day, which falls on April 23, is an annual non-event in England.


It is generally punctuated by English breweries trying to cash in and promote a party atmosphere; left-wingers saying that patriotism should be reclaimed from the racists; a variety of English eccentrics; and everyday folk wondering why the English just don't seem to bother.


The fact that Saint George's Day is not a public holiday only adds to the general lack of interest.

My country of origin is beyond repair.

Well, the best that you can say about that is that the programme has net another joke for it's audience.

Stephen Beerling was arrested and held for 12 hours after coming to the aid of a mother and baby in distress

A one-legged Royal Navy veteran has been arrested after he rescued his neighbour from two men.
Stephen Beerling, 52, dialled 999 and went to help his female neighbour after hearing her screaming during the night.
But the have-a-go hero was then arrested himself when officers spotted a rusty truncheon he had put in his pocket for self-defence.
Mr Beerling, a Liberal Democrat councillor, was arrested, locked up for 12 hours and charged with possessing an offensive weapon.
He told of his ordeal after learning the Crown Prosecution Service had decided to drop the charge against him.
Mr Beerling, of Maidstone, Kent, said: 'I am relieved, but very disappointed that it even came to this.
'I don't blame the police but maybe they should have used their noggin. Perhaps they were a little inexperienced.
'For me the blame lies entirely with the CPS - I just cannot understand why they wanted to press charges.'
Mr Beerling said the drama began at 2.30am on March 19 when he was woken by screams from his next door neighbour and her baby, and the sound of men shouting.
He called police and strapped on the false leg he has worn since his leg was amputated in March 2004, when he was still serving with the Royal Navy.
Aware he was probably outnumbered, he picked up a telescopic truncheon and put it in his back pocket in case he needed it for protection.

Mr Beerling then raced downstairs and went outside to help, and said his neighbour was being harassed by two men.
He tried to calm the men down while he waited for police, who later arrested both men and charged them with affray.
But when officers spotted the truncheon in his back pocket he was also arrested, taken to Maidstone police station, kept in the cells overnight and charged with possessing an offensive weapon.
His case was due at Maidstone Crown Court this week but on Wednesday the CPS decided to drop the charge.
The former sailor said: 'I could not believe what was happening. When they tried to open the truncheon, it was all rusted up. I've had it for years and it's just been sitting in a drawer.
'It could be classed as an offensive weapon if it was taken out into public and used with intent. I hadn't even taken it out of my pocket.
'But despite everything that's happened I wouldn't think twice about stepping in to help people again. I could not have stood by and let it go.
'I believe the most important thing for right-thinking people to do is to stand up to criminals who blight our society. It is the only thing we can do.'
In a joint statement, Kent Police and Senior Crown Prosecutor Janet Garnon-Williams said: 'Police officers lawfully arrested Mr Beerling for possessing an offensive weapon.
'However, a decision has now been taken jointly between CPS and police to discontinue the case, as there is not a realistic prospect of conviction.'
A police spokeswoman said the two men arrested with Mr Beerling were charged with affray, but the charges were later dropped.

One of the men was also charged with possession of cannabis and was given a £100 fine by Maidstone magistrates.

I stopped 4 youths vandalising some property belonging to a road contruction firm. In doing so I physically had to restrain one youth and escort him off of the contractors property. Within one hour I was arrested and locked up due to the youth reporting me for assault. I was detained for about 4 hours before the police decide that the youth was lying. Was he charged with any offence ? No. This for me was the deciding factor in getting out of that shit hole.

I understand what the guy went through. I blame the police for not using their better judgement.

14th June 2008 More than 50 police officers swarmed on a 12-year-old boy accused of stealing a £10 note which was hanging out of a cashpoint.

The army of officers was called after a row broke out when a woman, 27, accused Pascoe Petgrave of stealing the tenner from an HSBC bank machine in Thornton Heath, south London.

Pascoe, who stands at just 4ft 7in, said he had been given his mum's bank card to withdraw money when he spotted the note - but the woman who had been nearby claimed it belonged to her.

Pascoe's cousins - two women aged 21 and 28 - stepped in to stand up for him and a large crowd gathered before the trio were arrested on suspicion of theft.

The boy's mother Maxine, a 38-year-old nurse, who was called to the scene by the cousins, then watched in astonishment as her son was handcuffed and taken into police custody. All three cousins have since been bailed while enquiries continue.

Mrs Petgrave said yesterday: 'He's never been in any trouble before. This was a horrific ordeal for my 12-year-old boy, he was handcuffed and put into a headlock.

'When my house was burgled a year ago I wish they had sent just one of those officers. How did a row over a £10 note hanging out of an ATM machine get to that point?'

A Croydon police spokesman confirmed they were investigating an allegation of theft of £10.

When asked why 50 officers had been present, she added: 'Police attended the scene and during the course of investigating the matter, a large crowd had gathered.

Elements of this crowd were hostile to police activity which resulted in a call for further assistance being made. That was answered by other colleagues, who subsequently attended.'

Probably a race to see who could get the tenner first.

I think that some of the London coppers watch The Bill too frequently.

we live on the south coast in gosport, not exactly the crime capital of the world and pretty much everyone owns there homes and works.

2 nights ago i popped to the shop to find a gang of 100 maybe more kids beating the hell out of each other and any cars and shops they could find.
that is the problem with the uk, parents dont give 2 shits as long as there kids are out of sight. so every one else has to put up with em. parents are the problem.

As long as kids cant be seen or heard they dont care. my neighbours kid in my old flat got brought home by the cops for shopliffting or something, 2 hours later he was off out again adn i saw his mum who was telling me how bad the cops were and how embarrasing it was having them bring him home, so we could all see.

A car owner who put a for-sale note on his Ford Escort soon found another sign on the window - a £100 penalty ticket.
Victor Abrahams was accused of 'offering goods for sale in a parking place'.
When the 67-year-old grandfather called the council, he was told the offence had been introduced a year ago and had been advertised in the local paper.
But as he does not live in the North London borough of Barnet, he says he had no idea that new rules had been brought in.

'I don't live in the area but I've had my office here for the last 25 years and I've never heard of anything like it,' Mr Abrahams said yesterday.
'I've got a tax disc, I've got insurance, I was parked legally but I was penalised for advertising my car for sale.
The car-sale notice was swiftly joined by another sticker - a fixed penalty notice

'Lots of people do it so I can't believe it can be an offence. And why is the for-sale sign in my car window any different from a delivery van with the name and phone number of the company on the side? Or why is it different from a driving instructor's car that has the name and details of the driving school on the side? Surely if I'm offering goods for sale, so are they.'
Mr Abrahams, a property manager from Brent, North London, is retired but still works a few hours each day in Finchley. He decided to sell his R-registered Escort after he was offered a newer Saab by a friend. A month ago he put a printed A4 sign in the car reading: 'Ford Escort Ghia Cabriolet, fully loaded, very low mileage, one owner' with his mobile number at the bottom. The asking price was £2,995, although this was not on the notice.
Last Tuesday, having parked in a side street near his office, he returned to find the penalty ticket. He wrote to Barnet Council spelling out his objections that day and called two days later to confirm it had received his letter.
'They told me that the new rule had come in about a year ago and it had been advertised in the local paper,' he said. 'But I only work in Barnet, I don't live there so I hadn't seen the notice. What happens to all the other people like me who don't live in the area and don't know about it either? Is everyone going to get a ticket?'
Mr Abrahams is now selling his car through a garage. He is waiting to hear the result of his complaint before deciding whether to pay the fine.
Barnet council said the rule was introduced to keep parking space free for residents. A spokesman said: 'New parking contravention codes were introduced on April 4, 2007.
'A new code was introduced with the description of "using a vehicle in a parking place in connection with the sale or offering for sale or exposing for sale the goods when prohibited".
'The council's position is currently that we do not encourage or support trading from the public highway, including offering vehicles for sale. The council is undertaking a comprehensive review of this policy and will make a decision as to its viability after all of the options available to support our corporate priorities have been investigated.'

This article is correct in English law. It is illegal to advertise the sale of a motor vehicle whilst parked on the highway. This law was brought out to stop car dealers with little space from using the road to sell their wares. I used to be an Highways Inspector and enforced this rule a couple of times.
