Energy Ministry recommends motorists use NGV

BANGKOK, June 14 (TNA) -- Despite ongoing complaints by motorists using natural gas for vehicles (NGV) on the insufficient number and insufficient coverage through the country of accessible service stations, a senior Ministry of Energy official on Saturday held that owners of NGV-powered cars would benefit in the long-term.

Metta Banturngsuk, director-general of the Energy Business Department, urged motorists now using liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) to compare costs between LPG and the NGV, which Thailand can produce locally and with government support.

The government in July will raise the price of LPG used in automobiles but will maintain the price at Bt18 per kilogramme for household use, in effect raising local LPG prices in line with global prices, so that NGV users would have more benefit in future, said Mr. Metta.

NGV is now sold at Bt8.50 per kilogramme due to full support by the government, and the country has now begun to import it due to rising demand and insufficient local supply.

LPG is available at more service stations because it has been used in Thailand for about 25 years, while NGV has been used by cars for only about two years, he said, adding that he is optimistic that more NGV stations would be opened in Thailand during the second half of 2008.

Also, the cost of NGV tanks is expected to be reduced soon after the government has given its full support and has negotiated with manufacturers worldwide for imports into the country, Mr. Metta added. (TNA)-E111





NGV is the best way to go but the cheap dispensers and compressors installed by PTT take too long to fill the tank up hence the number of taxis waiting at NGV stations.

But what is the danger of using NGV (CNG) if a truck slams in the back of a converted saloon or hatch

It won't remain at that price for long.
It costs 12.5 baht per kg to produce so the price will have to rise to about 15 baht

I agree CNG prices are to be increased to between 10 and 15 baht per kilogramme next year from 8.50 baht now, prices would still be much lower than current diesel prices.

The losses and, lets be a bit diplomatic and say the peculiar way they do business in LOS, is restricting the number of refuelling stations being converted and the subsidy is also causing problems for PTT’s plans to to build more NGV facilities
