Preferably Gatling mini guns, as smaller firearms are rather weak and could attract bullying and schoolyard taunts. These days, children over the age of 11 are already quite muscular and have good reflexes from playing video games, as well as for the same reason being familiar with several brands of mid-sized personal weapons on a theoretical level.

The need to arm 12-year-olds is pressing, and very much real - consider the large likelihood that one or several of their school teacher s turn out to be child molesters or serial killers. Surely these children must be allowed guns to protect and defend themselves against such freaks. Besides, it's a free country.

Not to mention that the country desperately needs the assistance of its junior citizenry to contribute to keeping the cafeterias and gyms of US schools free from rabidly frothing muslim suicide bombers, and arming them at an early age will prepare them to bravely and honourably take a stand for their country's unalienable rights to unlimited oil consumption.
