    Crap Hotels...

Number 1 in a series of... Well probably just this one to be honest, reviewing Thailands crappiest hotels:

    1. The Davis, Suk 24, BKK

Was in BKK for a meeting last week and had the misfortune of staying at this over-priced steaming pile of dog poo that has been disguised as a hotel.

First impressions weren't actually that bad - a pretty clean, modern and well-appointed looking place - but those lasted as long as it took me to get to the check-in counter. Once at check-in we were informed that our rooms had yet to be cleaned so we would have to wait 1hr. Being that it was then a little after 12pm it was no biggie as my meeting wasn't until 3pm and I needed some lunch so we had the B355 buffet (which admittedly was pretty good) at the hotel whilst waiting.

However when we were then told again at 1:30pm that the rooms were still not ready and that we should - and I quote - 'wait 1 sec sir' I started to lose my sense of humour. Things went into full meltdown when, after having waited a full 2,400 seconds instead of the advertised 1, we were still sitting there in the lobby waiting whilst watching a succession of other guests checking in and being ushered to their rooms.

Being that we were in danger of being late for the meeting at this stage we made a plan to storm the counter, take the silly bint of a receptionist hostage, and demand our money back. Sadly we only ended up complaining instead. After several blank looks I demanded to see the manager who came across and delivered all the standard hotel platitudes ('I'm sorry for the inconvienence sir' etc. You're sorry?? I'm bloody sorry I'm in this craptastic place!!).

The manager was astute enough to recognise she had an increasingly angry falang on her hands however and offered to upgrade us to the 'Executive Suite'. This bit of hotel manual diplomacy allayed my righteous anger for the time being. The time being until we realised that she intended us to share the Executive Suite. This being a timely juncture to point out the other in the "we" was my boss. Fine chap and all but I'll be focked if I'm going to share a room with him (a feeling that was mutual).

Anyways to make a long rant not so long, but much furious bluster later and we were ushered to the Exec. Suite to freshen up before heading off to our meeting on the promise that our rooms as originally booked would be ready on our return. Whilst heading out the door a clearly chuffed staff member informed us that, against all expectations, the rooms were actually ready now! Fantastic, the rooms we booked are ready a full 2hrs and 30min after we arrived and just before we head out the door to a meeting! This final insult to injury was enough and I stormed out without saying a word and spent a frustrated journey to my meeting thinking of all the clever, cutting and biting retorts I should've said. But didn't.

So yeah, 'The Davis'... Utter shite.

^ Oops, right you are. Soi 24 not 22.

Right across from the President Park which is cheaper and about 50x better!

I reckon all the hotels in CM are crap apart from the Mare Ping (I think,) anyway its the big white one in town. But that one excepted a 2.5 hours wait would be just fine, I have been up there waving my internet confirmation and they tell me I have no booking. I have the worst hotel experiences ever in CM, and that includes 5 years of traveling and staying in hotels around China 20 years ago.

This is an honest report of what happened yesterday. I have a police report and also receipt for the money I had to pay for my so-called damages if anyone requires me to back up my story.

After spending 3 hours on the bus from a place called Chai Pra Kan (or something like that) my family and I arrived at the Anodard hotel a little after midday. We were going to spend our last night in Chiang Mai before our flight back to Singapore the next morning.
Paid 995 baht for the room which allegedly slept 4 persons (in fact it contained 2 beds a little bigger than regular single beds.)

So then, up to the room. The bloke who brought up our bags switched on the airconditioning and went off to get us a jug of water for some reason.
I noticed that the bedroom sliding window was open by about 3 inches so I attempted to close it by sliding it shut. Big mistake.....the window wheels at the base must have been off the rollers or something.

I watched in horror as this big old window went crashing to the ground from our 3rd floor room. The fall was broken a little by the ledge that jutted out below our window, but it continued to crash downwards and landed between a pick-up truck and another vehicle.

Damn.....after being at the hotel for 10 minutes disaster had struck.

Like a fool I assumed that the hotel would take responsibility. How wrong I was.

The manager immediately asked me down to look at the damage. At this point I was thinking 'what does the damage have to do with me? - its your bloody window that fell out'

Things didnt seem to be looking too good for me, so I called a CM resident I know to rack his brains on what I should do. He called a nearby restaurant and the landlord and some of his staff came over from time to time after that to check how things were progressing and to assist with translation - for that many thanks guys!

Both vehicles were scratched slightly. The owner of the grey car was very nice and didnt ask for any money, just said it was nothing serious.

The pickup was a different story - it belonged to the hotel. The manager began insisting that I pay for the window and the damage to his pick-up truck. I refused and instead went across to a nearby restaurant for some lunch. By this time it must have been just before 1pm and we had had nothing to eat all day.

After ordering our lunch I noticed a policeman had arrived on his motorcycle so I left my family and went across the road back to the hotel.
The manager advised me that as I wasnt willing to pay for the damage, he had called the police as a 'third party'. The policeman smiled a lot but didnt speak any English so he called the tourist police, while we surveyed the damage below and also the scene above in the room.

It wouldnt take Columbo to realise that there was something wrong with the window that I had sent crashing below. There was another similar sliding window on the other side of the window, and it was clear I would never have been able to push that window off even if i tired - as it was securely in place.

The tourist police (2 of them - a guy and a girl) showed up and we continued the charade - this time in English. The tourist policeman seemed to understand exactly my point, but finally it came down to the same thing. I was very unlucky but would still have to pay for a replacement window (3900 baht) and for the damage to the hotel pick-up (2000 baht).

Finally I agreed to pay the amount as long as I got a police report and a receipt from the hotel to hopefully back up my claim under my travel insurance.

So then it was off to the ATM (I had only a little cash left as it was our last day in Thailand) and then the police station. The hotel manager made the police report with the motorcycle cop in attendance and I paid the 5,900 baht.

You can draw your own conclusions as to why the police sided with the hotel, but I have only heard bad conclusions from those who i have spoken to in Chiang Mai.

Avoid this hotel at all costs.

I have to say we loved our stay a few days earlier at the Novotel, but this Anodard is the pits. Imagine if a child had pushed the window and fallen out, or if someone had been below when the window landed. It doesnt bear thinking about does it

What about the Ratchapreuk in Korat? They had me listed as a Singaporean athlete. Are they blind??!!

Actually, the Ratchapreuk is a pretty decent hotel, so it doesn't belong in here.

The Davis was Chewit's Hotel and was the place where the fake hand grenade was lobbed into when he was exposing corruption in the higher echelons of the Royal Thai Police Force.

'The Davis' was actually built by K. Chuwit as another of his string of massage parlours. It was only when the shit hit the fan with him and the cops - and he 'turned over a new leaf' - that it was changed into a hotel when it was already 90% complete.

    2. The Bangkok Boutique Hotel, on Asoke.

Basically, it's a ponced up shithole and the room we had didn't have.....wait for it.......any storage for our clothes! Well, not a cupboard to hang anything from anyway. I've never encountered that before and it actually took me a while to work out why the room didn't look quite right? Eventually found a rack under the drawer's with 3 hangers - for two. You couldn't even hang trousers without them touching the floor. Madness.

And the plain concrete walls didn't go down a bundle either!

Plus as my missus was held up en route from Korat to meet me at the airport and had pretty much only arrived in Bangkok at the bus station as I was able to switch the mobile on after landing (yes, yes, I know what you're thinking - WRONG), she went straight there and got there before me. Well, just imagine how she was treated?

And it's in the middle of nowhere. I thought it was only a few minutes walk from Sukhumvit but it was actually nearer 15. I did learn where Soi Cowboy was though (seriously), not that we ventured in. Found an okayish pub near Asoke station as well.

Then we get to the brekky. Yup, you've guessed it, ham warmed in water and cold bleedin' hot dog's! Even the Thai stuff was crap and after a couple of days we found somewhere around the corner for some good nosh.

Checking out was interesting, to say the least.

    3. The Phimai Hotel in, you've guessed it, Phimai! Bed bugs, bitten to crap, nuff' said. Do avoid. Nice town, shame about the Hotel (there's another, called the Phimai Inn, but only found out about that later).

Ant,you've been here long enough to know "don't stay in a hotel and expect it to be any good unless it has a farang manager"......your boss should know that too,but considering what city he hails from....he probably doesn't know any better.

Stayed there a few times myself, but can't remember any disco near it. Only place I can think of is on the approach to the hotel, and even then never thought it loud enough to be heard in the hotel, or possibly do you mean the Top North Guesthouse.?
