Have you ever eaten turtle's eggs?

I was enjoying a few drinks the other night with the local Korat dignitaries. One policeman, an electrician, some hanger on from the copper and the head of the forestry commission.

Anyway, i was served up a few boiled eggs with soy sauce with my beer. Just how i like em'. The head forest bloke starts to tell me how turtles eggs are the best for eating. Sep sep heng apparently (That's lao i think).

Was he pulling my plonker or are turtles eggs the best thing since Stroller's dog recipe?

    Sap = aroi

Never had tutrle eggs, but had a small cup of turtle blood (Supon) in Tokyo.

    It was awful.

Seems odd that a forest ranger is scoffing down turtle eggs.

Yep, turtle meat too. Lots of sea turtle eggs traded amongst small Muslim fishing communities in southern Philippines, Malaysia, and Indonesia. They eat heaps of freshwater suckers upcountry in Thailand. Hope you enjoyed them mate.

Wasn't actually sea turtles he was talking about. But yes sea turtles are endangered worldwide, probably because of those Mexicans.

I have eaten turtle soup a few times here in Singapore and its very nice. Haven't eaten any turtle products for a while though because it's probably a bad thing to do.

Not just those Mexicans, everywhere in the world that sea Turtles come ashore to lay eggs there is always a mad rush to get the eggs by the locals, in Micronesia, and all the way down the coast in Central and south America and off shore islands there is a rape of the nesting grounds as well as anywhere in Asia or any ocean that has sea turtles.
Just seems to be a thing that is done, they are helpless to defend themselves or their nest areas and seems to be much money to be made from them.
And at sea I have brought a few aboard that had a nasty tumor on their necks from eating radioactive contaminated sea weed [I was told that caused the tumors] and some with plastic garbage, such as bags, and the plastic rack thing that is used to hold a six pack together, mono fishing line or mono nets parts tangled around them.
When I was young on small boats fishing we used to hook them and bring them aboard and butcher them so the people could eat them, but later years as they became scarce, in the early 60s we quit doing that and only brought them aboard if they showed signs of distress.
There should be more protection for them I would think.

If so then it is one of the damn few places in Thailand where conservation of anything is practiced and I bet sparingly at best anywhere.

Just because they say it do not make it so in Thailand.

Just like the law preventing water being thrown at vehicles on the hyways during songkran, that is about 4 years old and still never been enforced.
Taking a drivers license test and then have to know and obey the written traffic laws.
White lights on the front of a vehicle and red on the rear as per international rules, never happen in Thailand.
Yield right of way to emergency vehicles with lights flashing and siren sounding., never happen in Thailand.
Well we could carry on with this for ever, but you get the idea,, no rule or law is solid in Thailand.

The Cantonese Chinese will and do eat everything that walks, swims, crawls, flys, or otherwise moves or not on this earth.

If you ever want an eye opener, next time you're in Hong Kong, go visit the big outdoor wet market in Wanchai. Huge sea turtles being chopped up alive to go home to be put in some Tai Tai's soup. All kinds of turtles and many other (I assume) endangered creatures.
