Thread: Small Town Life

Sometimes I forget what a small town Korat is. After all, it's fairly spread out and has lots of big shopping venues and some awful traffic.

Last night I was tutoring my two private students when their gorgeous 18 YO cousin, who lives next door, stopped by. I included her in on the conversation. I saw she was wearing a Swensens uniform so made a remark on her employment.

"Yes," she said. "When are you coming to Swensens again? Last time you had a 'Sticky Gooey Fantasy' and you were reading 'Baan Lae Suan' magazine. I was surprised you can read Thai." (I can't, but the pictures are nice.)

Now, this was at least two months ago. How can she remember such detail? What I ate? What I was reading? Methinks a visit to Swensens is in order for today....

Then again, it is a small town.

BH can understand what you mean, same in Khon Kaen even though big population can go to the golf and one of the female caddies will say " Oh seen you in Big C the other day or saw you in one of the felang bars in town when passing", it is like a small town at times.

I usually cannot walk one block without having to talk to someone I know. It's the sort of place that the next morning people say to you 'how was dinner at the pub last night? You car was parked there a long time!)

That's what's known as a village.

in england perhaps, in australia we don't have villages, just towns and cities.

whats funny is that we are a regional centre so have all the govt departments, banks, businesses etc as the closest town in our state (over 1,000 people) is Broome which is a fraction over 1,000kms away.

With Thai families being fairly large it would be suicide to even think such naughty thoughts! And to top it off it's Thais past time to gossip!

What we as Farang's need to remember is that while the population of the particular town or city we stay in is large, the farang population can be quite small meaning that you tend to stand out and are instantly recognisable!

Tell her you want another sticky gooey fantasy only this time she should provide it.

I think that in the province there are well over 2000 farang. At least that's what one Immigration officer gave us as a top-of-the-head guesstimate.

^ BH, do all those Vietnam vets still congregate for beer breakfast in that Chinese hotel restaurant? I was there about eight years ago. They looked pretty old then. Sorry, can't remember the hotel name.

You know, Jet, I haven't been out to a bar (except for one) for breakfast, lunch, dinner or drinks in over a year.

The Vietnam vets actually moved over to the Pasinee restaurant a few years back. The place they used to meet was the VFW restaurant in the hotel you're thinking of.

I believe the VFW is mostly inactive now due to internal bickering.

There has been some controversy about the owner of the Pasinee, so I don't know if anyone goes there or not.

Yeah, most of them start around 10 AM. I drink, but I like to hold off at least until dusk. I kind of got tired of being teased about having plain soda with my kabob....
