Thailand seeks to block YouTube videos again

Thailand seeks to block YouTube videos again

    Fri Sep 21, 2007 12:09pm IST

BANGKOK (Reuters) - Thailand is seeking to block clips on video-sharing Web site YouTube, accusing the chief royal adviser of being the mastermind of the bloodless coup last year, a top Justice Ministry official said on Friday.

The government, which lifted a five-month ban on YouTube in August after it agreed to block clips deemed offensive to revered King Bhumibol Adulyadej, was seeking a court order to block two video clips posted recently on YouTube - Broadcast Yourself..

"In the next couple of days, we will seek a court order to block those links deemed to cause public confusion and threaten national security," Yanaphon Youngyuen, head of the Justice Ministry's Internet crimes unit, told Reuters.

"While awaiting the court order, we are seeking cooperation from Internet service providers to block those links," he said.

At least they are going about through due process this time.

And blocking only the links to the offending video clips and not the whole site.

    Still stinks though.

This kind of abuse by the censors is predicable - a precedent has been set - it will now become a part of accepted Thai internet culture.

Yes, I agree with you. I do believe this practice has now been accepted by Thais as completely normal. I doubt we will see any public outcry in the future as this practice continues.

Knowing how Thais feel towards the King you can hardly be surprised they are blocking them. As much as I hate censorship, you can't blame them for not wanting the younger generation, who are the more active on Youtube, to see what is basically very, very insulting vids, which serve no real purpose.

That said, the responses from Thais who saw the last batch were quite commendable.

Well, they're going to keep martial law going after the election, so why not censorship:

I had to laugh. My friend was at the house and got on the net. He was checking the TV website for something and the site was down. I told him to go to teakdoor and check it out and he saw the thread about youtube......now he is claiming that TV has been been blocked as well. He is sure of it and that it is a Thai conspiracy. I assured him that if TV is blocked, he can always go to teakdoor instead. Now all he needs to do is become a member.

Anyone else found the TV site to be down for the past several hours?????

Turkey orders YouTube blocked over clips

    By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
    2007-09-21

ANKARA, Turkey - A Turkish court has ordered the country's telecommunications company to block access to the popular video-sharing site YouTube because of clips the court deems insulting to leading political figures.

It was the second time Turkey has blocked access to YouTube. In March, the site owned by Google Inc. was blocked for two days after a complaint that some clips insulted Turkey's founder, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk. The ban was lifted after the offending clips were removed.
