Whilst the rest of the World condems it as torture.

If you're going to lecture the rest of the World about 'freedom' and 'democracy' you can expect to be held to certain standards and expectations.

Well, as John Wayne was fond of saying: "A man's gotta do what a man's gotta do" and while there are hypocrites everywhere, America will do what's necessary to avert another attack.

Even if that means illegally detaining people, torturing them and denying basic human rights all the while breeding more and more hatred, eh.

Jeeze - you grab a guy on the battlefield who's not wearing a 'uniform' of some specific country who has officially declared war with you. You detain this 'gentleman' in Gitmo for example since he can't be brought to US soil and 'elicit' information from him to avert another attack. This elicitation involves listening to say 'Nine Inch Nails' (KSM allegedly broke down when subjected to Britney Spears) a bit of sleep deprivition and a dunking in the water-boarding trough.

After they've given up the goods they have it made. No more western music, good food (they get fat there ya know) and unlimited Koran study. What happens when you let 'em loose? You got it! They revert to their old ways so...let's keep 'em there until...?

Battlefield? Like the streets of Italy or an airport in Canada you mean?

Point is Booners, it's not wise to base policy on what some character in a movie would say.

Nor is it very helpful to lecture others about freedom and democracy on the one hand whilst totally ignoring binding conventions on the other.

Who's talking about the movies here?
I'm referring to the gang-bangers we grabbed in Afganistan and high profile punks like KSM...

And what about the less 'high profile' people then? The ones that have fallen victim to extraordinary rendition and could, in all actuality, be innocent yet are deprived of the right to even a trial. Something that even the most despotic of nations at least make a show of doing.

    What about them?

Collateral victims? Wrong place at the wrong time?
Who's to decide if they are innocent/guilty?

Matter of opinion, some nutters would rather disband Western civilisation than risk breaching the strictest interpretation of an innocent person's rights.

Usually a little something called due process and the right to be tried for your alleged crimes, the right to face your accusers. Something that is being denied.

Pretty melodramtic don't you think. There's no "strict interpretation" of rights because they patently have been denied them. What does that say about 'Western civilisation'?

It's basically a moot point anyhow as those boys aren't going anywhere soon. As been said, the ones who have been let loose return to their bad habits and blow up more innocent lives.

A moot point? Try telling that to the families of those that are unlawfully incarcerated.

Where was that said? Do you have some examples of such?

And if they were 'guilty' ("return to their bad habits and blow up more innocent lives") why were they released in the first place? Or is it that, deprived of basic human rights, the time of their incarceration has grown bitterness and resentment against their unlawful persecuters?

Loads of reports in MSM of former inmates showing up in Pakistan/Afganistan having a 'go' at us all over again and I can't be arsed to look 'em up for you right now.

You and ray make a great tag-team!

Of course you can't. Should probably not cite them in the first place if that's the case though.

Nothing heavy-handed about it, Booners. This is 'Issues', a section for debate. And you can't have reasoned and rational debate if you make claims based on something you "can't be arsed" to support.

The only applicable standard is common sense and decency.

Ant...it's pretty much common knowledge that those former inmates of Gitmo have returned to their evil ways - it's out there in like, in the public domain as it were. To debate that issue is frankly, a non-starter...

Well if it's in the public domain and is common knowledge it really shouldn't be too much of a problem for you to cite some objective evidence in support of it should it.

Also remembering that "returned to their evil ways" is your statement and a clear inference that they were invovled in terrorist activities in the first place.

    Go here .

Pentagon: 7 ex-Gitmo prisoners return to terror

"And why not? The Pentagon dares not do anything to challenge the ideology of the prisoners there — signing a statement is nothing, especially to men whose religion sanctions religious deception (taqiyya, cf. Qur'an 16:106). "
