The problem with a bike over 150cc is servicing and fixing them. All Thai mechanics know these bikes. Start getting into unusual bikes, or bigger engine sizes, then you have to go to specialist shops. Parts also get expensive.

As an 'oldie', I would honestly suggest, that if you are buying your first motorcycle, with the intention of going to a larger bike later, that you do not purchase one of the clutchless machines. Start with a motorcycle that has a manual clutch, and get used to riding a machine as it is intended to be ridden.

It's not so many years ago that the famous '500 cc Manx Norton' could only produce about 45 bhp!

Rigger, MtD wants a decent bike at a decent price, no need to play price wars here. (I know you were Kidding) Hell, you can buy any bike you want, just wait, another will come around. This goes for everyone, don't rush on the first "deal" you see, there are lots of bikes around and if you have patience, the one you want or like will most likely turn up or one of the friends on here will help you find it. I really do love bikes but just don't have the dosh to fuel the fever.

The fuel injected Wave 125 has to be the best value here in LOS period. It's got plenty of power for most situations. It's a bit plain but it will run all day long @ 100 kph. You really don't need much more than that.

I may buy one and fit an aux fuel tank, some postman saddle bags and do an Iron Butt ride to prove it.

    This is a serious Q.
Whats the most dangerous bike right now?
I've heard of these 'Phaeton' things for around 20K
    Will that do the trick?

My apologies for an inaccurate response, I was going purely from memory, which quite obviously ain't what it was!

Remember the first Harley that I ever rode, foot clutch and a hand gear change, it just about frightened the life out of me!

Sorry Earl, can't agree with that at all, to my mind they are woefully underpowered, I'm no speed freak but a 100 Kms Hr ? every 2nd pickup would be passing you, its dangerous for me to not be going at or faster than the prevailing traffic. Its easier to see whats in front than try and anticipate the possible direction of some yaabaa afflicted Somchai trying to pass you.
The braking is dangerous, too little tire contact, CRAP tires and Pathetically cheap components. The brakes have no progression, light switch on / off and they lock up too easily.
The shocks are a bloody joke, I understand they probably were not desigend to cope with lard arsed farangs but under any stress they don't perform, rebound is too slow to react to moderate bumps, results in the wheels spending more time in the air than on the ground. With my weight they bottom out all too easily resulting in NO suspension.
Wheels / tires are way too light, on my wifes one I have put the wheel out of round twice and had 2 wrecked tires on the 6 months she has had it. I will say the motor is quite good, but GBox is Honda's usual transmission shit, why don't they steal Mr Suzuki's transmission designer? From Superbikes to Scooters, Suzuki builds great Gear boxs. As for a long trip, wish you luck, the only Honda seat I found comfortable was a Varado, the scooters seat is similar to the Africa Twin, 3 hours in it and your arse will be bleeding. Happy to admit they are good value for money, and fine for the intended purpose i.e. town and suburban riding but to compare them witha proper bike. No way!

Why don't you buy her something easy to ride, those chopper things are a bitch to handle, they are hard to get around corners. Foward controls are difficult to use I can't see the point, if you want to put yr foot on the ground it has to travel quite a long way instead of just naturally dropping down to the ground from the footpeg.
A CB 400 or similar style is going to be a lot easier to handle.

for starters the seat height on the CB 400 is to hi for her and she wanted a chopper I thought about a Rebal 250 or Virago 250 but this one just turned up at very cheap money as well as I know the history of the bike recent jap import. So if she cant ride it I can sell it on to someone else easy enough with out losing money
