    Thai National ID Card

My soon to be 15 year old Thai step- daughter doesn't yet have a Thai National ID card. Do I need to get her back to Thailand by a certain age to avoid any problems?

Technically, should have one by 15 years old. If you're a little off, they will let it slide. I would have it done the next time she is in Thailand. The longer you wait the more difficult they make it for you to get one. Like I got mine in my 30's and they required me to bring in my mother, do a DNA test, and have two Thai nationals swear I am a Thai national, and I was born in Thailand to a Thai national mother, in a Thai hospital, with a Thai birth certificate. Seriously, just get it done as soon as you can.

^^Yeah. Sounds about right. Took me TWO years to get my ID. Every time I went over, tried to do it. They said I was missing something. Next time I went, they said I was missing something else. After two years, finally got it. My half brother had it in a year (two trips). He doesn't have U.S. citizenship, so...I guess for a while he was stateless...

    15 isn't the age for ID any more, it's 8 I think, maybe 7.

My 13 year old has had one for close to 2 years since the legislation came in.

    Interesting and informative, Thet.

One could do their little darlings [Thai] a great favour and don't displace them to begin with. Obtain the National ID Card early in life....3 or 4 years old is quite OK.

    Thanks for the feedback.

So if she makes it back to Thailand next year when she's 16 and goes to get the ID with her Thai passport, house book and mother she might still get hassled I take it ? So cut to the chase ... 500 baht sound about right to grease the skids?

You wont have to pay that. They will I am sure understand your daughter was in Japan for a number of years, and then in the states. They are pretty easy going at the amphur office about this.

This is one of those times when I wish I could have some fun by going with her and telling her to only speak in English until called to the counter...

I cant see the point of ID cards. If I was sober I'd know who I am,and if I was drunk,I would probably lose it or forget where I put it. So what is the point?

always useful for all sorts of nefarious activities

I used my driving licence to open my door the other day, so an ID card can also be used for that

Bobcock is correct. ID cards became compulsory for 7 year olds in July 2011.

Thanks. Whenever she does finally make it back to Thailand I reckon the simple fact she has a Thai passport ought to be a clue as to what her country of origin is. Starting to wonder why I'm even worried about her ID card anyway.

I understand that the Thai Embassy in some countries can now issue Thai ID cards. I am not sure if this is only renewals but it is worth checking with them.

Interesting especially as they tend to struggle to issue the actual things here......

Thanks. I'll do some research on the Thai Consulate in Portland, Oregon to see if they do it.

Finally got the Thai national ID card yesterday. She's 17 now and from what info was relayed back to me it was a pain the ass getting it issued.
