Thread: Exterior Doors

In Thailand the exterior doors of most homes seem to swing out rather than in. I asked Ms. B about this and she had no clue as to why.

Is there some logical, religious, practical or superstitious reason for this?

I'd like to have my front door swing in to avoid tampering with the hinges.

Any reason why not?

If they swing out then can't they just unscrew the hinges ? I would of thought it was just utilisation of space, can remember ever seeing an inward swinging extirier door back home either

I've got two sets of doors here....a wooden set that swing out, then a metal set, with mosquitto net thingies on them, that swing in.

Exterior doors in commercial places are supposed to always swing out because it's easier to exit in case of fire. I guess the Thais do house doors that way for the same reason due to their inherant safetywiseness (new word!!).

My door neither swings in or out at my new house...

In the US most residential exterior doors swing in. Commercial exterior doors swing out for safety reasons (fire panic, mainly). If the doors swing out, the hinge pins are exposed to the outside and can be messed with. If the doors swing in the hinge pins are inside.

^Most doors in Thailand are kept open during the day, so it makes sense for them to either opne outwards or be sliding doors

what gives bud ... it slides sideways, up&down, lift exits into yer apt., draw bridge over mote, forcefield or jez no door due to temporary quarters under some bridge?

It's harder to break through an outward opening door as the door jams stop it whereas on an inward opening door it is only the lock.
If you fit door pins then the hinges will no longer present an easy target.

So, are we going to be looked at as totally weird if I have the front door swing in thereby leaving more room on the front porch where we will probably be spending lots of time (happy hour, etc.)?

Yes mine open flat to the exterior wall. I would not be able to do the same if they opened inwards due to space restrictions.

The porch isn't real big. If we put a couple of chairs and a small table there they would interfere with the door opening. On the other hand, if the door swings in and to the left it will open into unused space.

Yes, it is.

I went for sliding exterior doors, the reason being that when it rains the wood swells and they are a right knut to open.
