Thread: Favourite artist/Band of all time?

I mentioned on another thread recently who my favourite band were, and got me wondering what kind of bands other people would feel the same way about. (I'm sure it's been asked before, but I didn't find it when I searched)

I have a very eclectic taste in music, and the band that just tips it for me is quite a strange choice, that not too many (if any) people would agree on. For me, Dr Hook and the medicine Show, were the complete package.

Typical of the time, they were all about two things. Being off their faces, and having a blast making music. A lot of the time their music was poor, because they were just so fucked, literally dropping things and falling over, but it didn't matter, you could see how much fun they were having, and they never fail to put a smile on my face.

I'm never sure exactly what impact they have had on people in general. I'm fairly sure there will be a lot of people who, if they even bother to reply to this thread, will do so just to say how pony they were. But how aware of them are people in general? Do people under 40 even know who they are? Anyway, I'll admit they're not going to be every bodies cup of tea, but for some reason they just embody that era in the past were, musicians just got fucked and had fun making music.

Like I said before, I know i'm in a small minority of people who would vote this as the best band of all time, so tell us who gets your vote and why.

Favourite band, too difficult to call but artist, still very difficult but for me has to be Stevie Wonder.

Don't know much about Beck, but Wonder is a great performer with a great voice, no question.

If you can't call your favourite 100%, just pick one of the contenders randomly. Or perhaps we should do a top 5/10 list as well?

I saw them twice in 1973 and again in 1975. Genesis follows closely behind in influencing my tastes..

guy Ray Sawyer?). The wife of my oldest best friend wanted to see them. Probably the worst concert I ever went to. Sorry.

I think you would have seen Dennis. There was no actual Dr hook, although everybody assumed it was Ray Sawyer, making the connection with the eye patch. Did the guy you saw have an eye patch?

Pink Floyd are one of those bands, that the stuff of theirs I like, I really love, but they have done so much that I really don't like as well, probably 70%, so because of that would never make a favourite list.

Never heard of Pat Metheny, so will check him out.

Easy. The Global Village Trucking Company. Under rated and priceless. Lived in a commune in Norfolk and often played for free. Saw them play half a dozen times in the 70's. Always gave their best and left you feeling glad to be alive.

Good shout LT with the Chili Peppers . A proper rock band although with John Frusciante having left , maybe their new album will be a bit different .
Logician I didn't realise Dr. Hook were such complete stoners - perhaps I'm a bit too young ?
But for me the late Bob Marley had it all , in fact my daughter was only the other day singing his praises . How many other artists music could still have such relevance 30 years on ?

Yeh good call. Marley would make everybodies top 30/40 wouldn't he? He has to be one of the most universally loved artist ever. Although that was mainly due to the connection with dope for a lot of people I'm sure.

I've been trying to expand my collection of Reggae recently, who has much other than Bob in their collection? The best I came up with was Toots and The Maytals, but open to any other recommendations.

I was a huge OCS fan years back. They've done some great stuff.

For me, i don't really have an all time favorite. But if i have to judge by the times i listen to an artist(s)? Then i'd have to say: Underworld, Depeche Mode and Genesis invisible touch for one track in particular, domino.

Café Tacuba. OK, nothing they record is in English which limits their exposure. Pity, as their recordings are brilliant.
