    Gandhi Cooks!

In this thread we will learn how to prepare a healthy wholesome and cheap breakfast

    Oatmeal !

The key to making oatmeal is to use raw oats of a good quality , I buy this brand in Foodland - about 40 baht for the whole bag , also available on small leaf variety.

I will let you in on a few Anthony Bourdain trade type cooking secrets

1st is to use brown sugar a'la Mick Jagger and to melt it into the boiling water , this gives the flavor the proper blended sweetness

The next hot tip is send a blast of cold fresh milk into the mixture just prior to it being fully cooked - this basically seals the deal bringing the boiling oats to a quick standstill and then forcing them to heat up again albeit in a newer creamer texture - Julia Child would have gotten moist over this tip

And Voila ! - a healthy breakfast is served

Best way is before you go to bed put 4 heaped table spoons of raw oats in a bowl.
Pour in cold milk ( cow or soy- (or goat/sheep if you can get it Yum Yum! ) pop it into the fridge.
Come brekkie time - take it out top up the milk 'cos most will have been absorbed overnight- a spoon full of honey/ golden syrup or raspberry jam - stir it in !
Sets you up for the day !!!

No messy washing up either !

Personaly I do Not like milk in my porridge, but these recipes are interesting, especially the brown sugar, can't I just use water instead of milk? I love banana and raisins on top, sometimes apple or pear

I really found oatmeal in jail a very useful thing.
The way they cooked it for a long time in to much water and made the mix in cold water to start,
Shit we used it to glue Playboy Centerfolds on the walls with.

    Great Breakfast (Healthy Too)

Good methods all but if you have a micro-wave handy this works great too and the oats have some texture to each bite. In a bowl add 1/2 cup of whole oats (not "Quick Oats"), with just enough water to cover. You may have to adjust the time on your micro-wave because of the various powers available but mine is old. Probably 750 watts, so I use a two minute setting for the first cooking. The oats will cook and raise up in the bowl and all the water will be absorbed. I add a teaspoon or so of butter, some Cinnamon and some maple syrup to taste. If you like yours very hot then put it back in the micro-wave for 30-45 seconds before eating. Excellent!
I sometimes add toasted rye bread either buttered or plain. Have even added a couple of slices of bacon on the side too.

    Bon Appetite,
    Shiloh Jim

I have Quick Oats every day here in the UK... I am going to be in Phuket in a couple of weeks and rather than bring some with me I wonder if they (or similar) are available in Phuket... anyone?

They sell a Quaker brand of quick boil oats , not quite as tasty as the real slow boil variety.
