    Beautiful Thai cities/towns

    Anyone ever seen one?

I've been comparing a few pictures..

Compton, L.A - Home of gangster rap and apparently a really dangerous, run down ghetto, where if one is not a homie, one might find oneself with a cap in ones arse.
Looks perfectly nice to me..whats the fuss about?

Then we have Peckham in south east London, where it is commonplace to see wide boys talking like Jamaicans, "Wagwan blood" and relieving you of your footwear or smacking you up for fun..

    Again, looks quite pleasant..

Next we have the slums of Rio where you could walk for 20km's before finding a house with a bar of soap..

    Hmm..pretty colours..

Finally we have Suratthani..a well to do city and province in Southern Thailand.
Grim, just down right fucking grim..

Cities and towns tend to be an eye sore here.

Kampheang Phet is the closest I've been to somet that you could say, "hmm, this isn't a grotty shithole" about.

Anyone ever been to a nice one? Pics?

Every town I've seen could do with a lick of paint. The worst place I've been to is Grangetown on Teesside a total hovel.

Even the locals call it Beirut.

Trouble with Thai shophouses is generally they are rented, why spend say 20,000baht having the outside painted if your only renting, or heaven forbid 250,000baht making it look really nice, although saying that I shall probably paint the outside of my shophouse this month, although I won't bother redoing the front garden area for a few more years till they finish the road, they still got to dig it up 2 more times and it was about 3 years ago they started

I've driven up and down both borders in Thailand, through beautiful, lush countryside, spotted by occasional towns. Without exception, the towns are eyesores. They all look like the worst of Eastern European architecture; built on the cheap, with never a bit of maintenance since they were put up, half finished.

Too much concrete, not enough bricks seems to be the problem and that makes for horrible looking towns..

I was riding my bike up around the higher altitude tropical forest areas East of Pattaya (Nong Barlie) and was amazed at how beautiful the place is and then I stopped at a clearing which gave me a view of Pattaya City and the Gulf of Thailand.

What an absolute contrast of beauty on one side of the road and an absolute concrete shit hole on the other.

This may come as a bit of a shock but both borders doesn't mean 4, ie Laos, Cambodia, Myanmar, Malaysia, anyway Nakhon Sri Thammarat is probably the nicest town I have seen, nice roads and nice area, albeit full of muslim terrorists and killers and stuff.

^^Two then. Point is the same. In general, they are eyesores. I am certain there are exceptions, but I haven't seen many attractive towns. There are certainly some individual buildings that are attractive, but in general, pretty grim looking towns. Same here in the Philippines. Motorcycle shops, noodle shops, trash heaps, dilapidated buses, tire repair shops, etc.

You can find a nice picture in any town, but I'm from Los Angeles, and I would not try to walk through Compton in broad daylight. The gang problem in Los Angeles County is incredible. Some of those new homes in the middle of downtown browntown are built with government money, no private investor would waste the effort.

Many parts of Phuket Town are rather nice.

Old Town Phrae is nice.. Some nicer areas in Chiang Mai as well. But universally nice end-to-end is hard to find anywhere.

I found bits of Ubon okay, and Chachaengsao is a fairly nice river town, albeit small. The predominance of concrete blocks, be they shophouses or bank/gov't buildings, really does make for uniformly dull streetscapes. This drabness is only reinforced by the near total lack of upkeep. A lick of decent paint once in a decade would go some way in relieving the monotony of meh, but that just don't happen here.

    Nice people tho...

Trang's a nice place. It has its crappy shophouses but there's also some genuine character. It's also the cleanest Thai city/town I've seen with some interesting fountains and several nice public parks.

Yasothon is clean and respectable looking. Same architecture as elsewhere in Thailand which is a downer. Decent streets and infrastructure that always seem clean and orderly.

Central area (market etc.) is old and worn looking but it tends to lend character I think.

The black and white Peckham was a nice place, it's a shithole now though!
The Nigo's are more of a worry than the plastic wannabie yardies now.

I drove through Compton/Crompton and Watts a few years ago and it was ok during the day but you don't stop at any red lights at night!
Well, luckily I didn't have any tortoises on me at the time...
