    Very cool photo:

"I should say it is the most complicated photograph I have ever made. It shows position of the Sun on the sky in the same time of a day during one year...
Analemma - a trace of the annual movement of the Sun on the sky - is well known among experts of sun-dials and old Earth's globes as a diagram of change of seasons and an equation of time. Between August 30th 1998 and August 19th 1999 I have photographed the Sun 36 times on a single frame of 60-mm film. The pictures were taken exactly at 5:45 UT (Universal time) of every tenth day. Previously, the position of the Sun on the sky was calculated with computer as well as optimal moments of time for taking each of the exposures. However, my success was strongly limited by the weather. Nobody can guarantee fine weather every tenth day even for a few minutes. Approximately, there are 120-170 sunny days a year in Crimea. That made me sure that my aim could be achieved. To do the job, the camera must stay fixed during 12 months. It was difficult to find such a place where the camera would be safe. The solution of the problem was to make a plug-in platform rigidly connected to the camera, which allowed to keep accurate position of the camera during next mountings. Thus the platform with the camera could be mounted and dismounted repeatedly. I use "Kiev-60" camera with the lens "Flektogon" 4/50 and neutral filter N-4. Vertical field of view of the objective is about 50 degrees which allowed to photograph all the "figure-of-eight". The exposures were 1/1000 seconds with the diaphragm 22. When the weather was bad the shooting might be postponed for 1-2 days, but not longer. Due to bad weather conditions I had to miss 2 exposures (November 26th and June 20th); the operating schedule was shifted but it had almost no influence on the appearance of the resulting picture. The background photograph was taken on 10th July 1999 in the evening."

Yes very cool, just talked with my dear old Mum yesterday night, it is the dark time now back home with real daylight only from around 8 in the morning until 3,30 in the afternoon, in our summers there is light and semi light 24 hours, the photo highlights that big difference on a years basis real good. And it looks amazing too.

Now that is a kick ass picture, very interesting and I have never really given that a thought.
But have lived in Alaska and above the Arctic Circle and in Matanuska it was nothing to see a guy shingling his roof at 2 am.
At my cabin in Idaho the sun hit my solar panels at 1030 and went down at 1430, and was shining at 0500 and set at 2200 in summer.

I am not sure if I mis-read that, but just to be clear I did not take the pic and I certainly didn't mean to imply that I did.

I just found it while I was goofing off on the web and thought it was interesting so I posted it here.

Yep, I'll add just one more "very cool pic" to the list of very cool pics.

    A dedicated photographer.

Terrific find Slac, wonderful patient work by the photographer. Not sure about the suitability of a phenomenon named Anal-emma though!

What's interesting is the pattern. You would assume that it would be a circle or an ellipse, but these pics show that's not the case. Great stuff.

The infinity shape is because of the earths declination, i.e the Axis it rotates about is a bit tilted.

If you did it at the equator would each side of the loop be the same size?

How about at a pole, would that make a circle or elipse?

OK, I started trying to figure out the answer to my question, but after I came up against these gems:

describing something about sundials I decided it was going to be far too hard for my dumbass to do on a lazy Sunday afternoon (or any afternoon for that matter since it is ~25 years since I last dealt with trig.). I am going to assume the answer is no, stick to pretty pictures, and start drinking.

Actually it shouldn't be too hard to model this since the formulae are known in a spreadsheet for different places on the planet to make graphs. Might be a fun thing to do one of these days (yeah, I know my idea of fun is warped!)

Do they teach spelling in collage [sic], or just equasions [sic]?

From the Equator , the analemma lies horizontally, with the smaller loop to the north and the larger loop towards the south.

Thanks. I hadn't read your link when I posted the question, but then when I started thinking about it I went of to Wiki it.

I couldn't get my thick head around that bit; if it was horizontal wouldn't one loop be to the West and one to the East?

you are looking at the sun rising , so its yearly variation between north east and south east would be the greatest at the equator, hence the horizontal figure 8
