Sleeping in Thailand

We all have to sleep. Some of us require just a few hours per day while many of us could sleep away the day. So what are we going to sleep on?

In my past I have slept on the ground, cardboard, side of the road and worn out beds, etc.. As a matter of fact growing up when we did not have the money for a new mattress, we would just slide a sheet of plywood between the box springs and the mattress.

But today was an experience. We went to the Furniture Fair in Bangkok.

We had sat and laid on almost every mattress available and nothing felt right. And then...

I was in heaven. This mattress was unbelievable. I had to have one.

The wife loved it.

However, at the end of the day; we did not buy this wonderful mattress. Anyone want to guess the price?

Looks like the matresses I had on my sail boats,, had them made with Nimbus Foam, no moisture and non crushing.

But I have no idea what you paid..

Trust me, if I had the dough I would have bought this mattress today.

I did buy two pillows at B4500 per pillow. The wife thinks it might help my snoring...

Hope it helps. Back in the states I purchased one of those pillows some time back. Had to throw the damn thing out. Didn't let air circulate between the head/neck and the pillow. Sweat like the proverbial pig. A friend bought the mattress and had the same problem only down the entire body length. Hope they've improved since then.

A friend on mine has one of those and it is really comfortable. In the states you can buy a mattress topper made of the same foam, but it is only 3 inches thick. You just throw it on top and the foam texture keeps it from moving around. I bought one and you really can't feel the difference. Cost was about $100 US and it weighs about 50 pounds. I've considered bringing one on my next trip as a piece of checked baggage.

Tempurpedic mattresses are the best you can get in the states and yes, they run about $1000...

I have friend in Jomtien that knows a place that makes custom mattresses that are very comfortable... Not Tempurpedic comfortable, but much better than the average back-breaker... They run in the 70K baht range...

Agree with you and same for me.

But what happen in the past should stay in the past.

You spend at least one third of your life on your mattress. It just depends how much is worth one third of your life.

please let me know; if I bought two pillows they'd be used to suffocate me . . . snoring which used to be 'funny' is now life-threatening (mine!)

Pillows are the thing that really used to piss me off !

I sweat like the proverbial pig at night but cant sleep with the air con running .

A local laundry washes and dries pillows for 250 baht each !
Mine needed doing every week as they would smell like a bloody mushroom farm after that .

Solution ?
I recently found a store in Phuket that sells non - allergenic, anti bacterial, pillows that last for 10 days before they start fermenting !

Manufacturer is Lotus ( dont think they are anything to do with Tesco ) and they last over a week!
After that they are in the bin and a new one used.
At 99 baht I think I am on a winner !

I paid 20K for what I thought was a decent mattress a couple of years ago. It's a backache machine now.
Mattresses are horribly overpriced over here.

I had a foam bed in the UK. A furniture maker friend cut the foam to size and that was it. Should be easy to get one cut to size in Bangkok for little money. Worth trying I reckon.

It was very comfy and still superior to my fancy imported mattress that I use now.

The Tempur website says the mattresses run from about $1,500 to $4,000. Picture doesn't show which model. Would expect it to be about 30% higher than in the US due to import duty.
Apparently some people have issues with the lack of air circulation and complain of overheating.

^ Yes, they do sink heat if you lay in one spot all night... It's still the best mattress I've ever owned...

Wonder if I could become an exclusive agent in the land of fake smiles for these materesses ??????? wow !!!!!!!! bet Id sell millions out there , I can imagine all the rice farmers with their painfull backs cueing up outside the local branch now to load up their new 150000 baht materess onto their sidecars , ( mind you they would have to take that bit of corrugated iron off the top to get it to sit on the chair
