    German Man Suffocates In Pattaya

    GERMAN MAN SUFFOCATES IN PATTAYA

A German national has suffocated at his home on Soi Siam Country Club road, whilst eating an appetising pork based dinner with his Thai wife of many years.

Pattaya, 8th of November 2009 (PDN): At 8:00pm on the 8th of November, Police Lieutenant Colonel Norawit Julwanit a police investigator from the Pattaya City area received a call from the Pattaya Memorial Hospital regarding a male foreigner who had recently died of suffocation in the hospitals Emergency Response unit (E.R.) It was explained to Lt Col Norawit that the foreign man was rushed to the hospital by ambulance as he was suffocating on some food that had got stuck in his throat at dinner. The hospital was unable to help fast enough and the man subsequently died of suffocation.

Police sent to the scene to investigate, discovered the body of a foreign man, now known to be that of Mr Manfred Schneider age 64, of German nationality. There was no sign of harm or misconduct on the body allowing police to dismiss any acts of foul play immediately, the death was also stated to have happened within the hour. Mr Schneider was accompanied by his wife Mrs Pranee Prombuht age 39, who was still seen to be sitting next to Mr Schneider’s body crying inconsolably at the death of her beloved husband.

Mrs Pranee later gave a statement to police where she informed them that her and her husband had been eating at his house, No.153/1 Pattaya Green View Village, when Mr Schneider had appeared to get something stuck in his throat.

Mrs Pranee explained that after repeated attempts to dislodge the stuck food Mr Schneider began to go blue and fell on the floor suffocating. Mrs Pranee had bought over some water for Mr Schneider and slapped him on the back several times to no avail. As the situation was looking increasingly worse by the second, Mrs Pranee decided to call the Pattaya Memorial Hospital to send an ambulance immediately.

The Ambulance team arrived at the scene of the incident to find Mr Schneider had stopped breathing for several minutes already. The paramedics tried to revive him with the use of electric shock equipment, however it was no use. They proceeded to rush Mr Schneider back to the hospital where unfortunately they were unable to save him. Doctors declared that the cause of death was an un-chewed piece of fried pork lodged in his oesophagus which blocked his airway and cause him to suffocate.

Police filed a report based on the evidence provided by the doctors and Mrs Pranee, after which the body was taken to Forensic Investigators for a detailed examination and the German Embassy was informed.

His wife seems genuinely upset too. Sad for her.

I can't help thinking about the normal family activities in my household leading up to an evening meal...preparing and cooking the food together with my wife..setting the table...kids coming in from play and quickly washing, fighting and arguing...inside dog coming in and laying down..yard dogs waiting patiently outside on guard..the laughter and tears about the days happenings..........and then its all gone....fucking GONE!!

    RIP Mr Schneider...

Yeah, explains the horror of it. All it takes is a sudden intake of air, piece of food in the wrong place at the wrong time. Laters. Scary.

The Heimlich maneuver would have saved his life. Too bad most people don't know how to do it.

Yeah, but even if his wife had known, I think she would've struggled with this poor guy. He looks substantial.

A friend of mine did the Heimlich on a patron at his restaurant in Singapore. He is a large Aussie ex butcher, she was a little Chinese lady.

Saved her . . . cracked five ribs.

didn't think that was recommended any more

thought the proceedure was to bend them over at the waist ( maybe over a chair ) , keep the air way straight and pointed toward the floor as best you can and pound with the open hand on the central back - gravity is the best assistance.
If you torture data for enough time , you can get it to say what you want.

Well the heimlich works, so I'd try that first. You only have a few minutes, there's not much time to experiment.

An ex-colleague of mine once had this happen at work, she was lucky that a guy saw her gag, interpreted it correctly, and applied the heimlich, thereby saving her.

    RIP Mr. Schneider.

yes , it works , but I think because of the side effects it is not recommended.

but if the person is in panic and you cannot get them in the safer postion anything that works is good enough.

I was just going to post that....funny a German maneuver could've saved this very unfortunate German guy...my apologies if Heimlich wasn't German I couldn't be arsed to look it up...
My father was choking on a piece of bacon when I was very young he was also going blue and eventually pulled it out himself...as my mother at the time was running round the kitchen in hysterics!!! useless cow. Very scary for him, my sister and myself at the time.

Didn't know that Balders...your very informative, Funny really as I have a 'just' 1 yr old (31st October..haloween) little girl. I had seen in our baby book from the hospital that what you described is exactly what you have to do with a baby if they are choking....don't really wanna Heimlich a baby now do you...So stands to reason that it would then be the solution the adults as well.... Gravity works!

I was sitting in the Lobster Pot Restaurant on Walking Street in Pattaya and a large European bloke hit the floor apparently choking on something he swallowed.

After watching the Thai staff trying to stuff vicks inhalers up his nose (Thais think these things are life supporting) my mate and I went over to help.

First we tried the Heimlech maneuver, which is very easy to apply and we could not unblock his airway. Then my mate stuck his fingers down his throat and pulled his tongue back out of his throat followed by a gush of blood.

He was dead on arrival at the hospital due to what they say was a massive cardiac arrest.

I wonder if this poor soul actually passed away suffering from the same fate.

I suffered from a few fur balls over the years but a visit to our vet normally corrects the problem.
