UK tourist shot dead in Texas bar

A British tourist has been shot dead in a bar in the United States.

Thomas Reeve, 28, was killed when a man entered the bar in Amarillo, Texas, and opened fire, before robbing the venue and customers, says a local report.

A 48-year-old man was shot in the hand and a woman sexually assaulted, says the report. A 25-year-old man has been arrested by police, it adds.

The Foreign Office says its consulate is providing assistance to the family of Mr Reeve, of Maidenhead, Berkshire.

Mr Reeve had been driving through America with two friends.

    'Easygoing'
Another friend described Mr Reeve as "lovely and easygoing".
Texas newspaper The Lubbock Avalanche-Journal said on its website that police were called to the Spotted Pony Lounge at about 2245 local time on Thursday (0445 GMT on Friday).

It said a police manhunt ended with Ray Carlos Cisneros being taken into custody at about 1730 (2330 GMT) on Friday.

Mr Reeve died at Northwest Texas Hospital, Amarillo, it reports, before being taken to Lubbock for a post-mortem examination.

Adam Cox, a reporter at KGNC Radio Amarillo, told the BBC there was "a lot of shock" in the town at what had happened.
"It's a pretty popular bar, right in the centre of Amarillo, the Spotted Pony Bar. Not many people expect this to happen where people will wander in and shoot up a bar like that," he said.

Mr Cox said: "It really is a heartbreaking story, you hate to hear that. When we saw it was a UK national who had just got into Amarillo that day it made our hearts sink."
"We don't have any motive yet. We do know that the man had apparently been at the bar earlier in the day, so we don't know if there was anything that could have happened earlier."

Sadly one of the big differences between the UK and the USA are bars. In the UK they quite attractive, safe and attract many high quality people. Not the same in America. Amarillo is a rough transient town on Interstate 40 in N/W Texas. Most decent people there would not go in the majority of bars unless it was one attached to a decent restaurant.

Good point, Bob. Maybe we can set up an exchange program with some of those 'high quality' skinhead football scum to go to the US and teach them how to behave properly.

I feel very sorry for Mr. Reeve and his family, but even his mother said this was clearly an incident of being in the wrong place at the wrong time. It was a robbery. Robberies happen all over the world. To put this on some claim of out of control violence in US bars is absurd. There are bars in the US into which you would not venture if you had any common sense. I expect that is the case in most countries. Granted, thee are too many guns floating around the US, but that is also the case in many, many other countries. Assholes with guns rob and kill, and innocent bystanders get hurt. Sad, but true.

But proportionately there seems to be more psyco's using them in the US than in other counties. Perhaps it's due to the US wanting to be top in everything ?

Obviously you have never been to Amarillo. Your soccer hooligans would be wearing dresses and calling mommie in Amarillo.

Not my intent just saying that Amarillo is a pretty brutal place. In general America is a much more dangerous place than the UK guns or not. As an American this is not something I am proud of.

Indeed. In gringos' land gun-toting nutjobs have an habit of casually killing people pretty much everywhere, not just in bars

Does it make any difference to you that, in this case and the cases of the shootings in Orlando and Ft. Hood, the alleged killers were two Mexicans (maybe U.S. citizens) and a muslin one generation removed from the Middle East?

I blame Tony Christie in some respects, as the lyrics in his song clearly portray Amarillo as being a great town where hot chicks ("sweet Marie") hang out.

If the town is such a shithole, i reckon the family of this tourist might want to file a lawsuit against Mr Christie for his song.

    When the day is dawning,
    On a Texas Sunday Morning
How I long to be there
With Marie whos waiting for me there
    Every lonely city
    Where i hang my hat
    Aint as half as pretty,
    As where my baby's at

    [Chorus]
Is this the way to Amarillo?
Every night ive been hugging my pillow
    Dreaming dreams of Amarillo
And sweet Marie who waits for me
Show me the way to Amarillo
Ive been weeping like a willow
    Crying over Amarillo
And sweet Marie who waits for me

Sha la la la la la la [X3]
And Marie who waits for me

    [Chorus]
    Theres a church bell ringing
hear the song of joy that its singing
    For the sweet Maria
And the guy whos coming to see her
    Just beyond the highway
Theres an open plane and it keeps me going
    Through the wind and rain

    ^ OK, fair enough.

I've travelled across the US - coast to coast 4 times - never had a problem.
