Motherboard and custom PC question: Price??

    2 questions:

-Is 15,000 baht enough to get a decent (good graphics/sound performance) desktop PC at PanTip?

-Is 5000 baht for an Asus Striker II motherboard a good deal? how much should I expect to spend on a mother board? Okay three questions.

    Thanks in advance...

2.5k should get you a good enough MB, especially if you're going to buy cheap graphics & sound cards.

10,000 baht for the custom make up box should get you something along the lines of:

-Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.00GHz .........or better if you need it.
-ASUSTek P5VD2-VM motherboard...........about 2500-3000 baht, if you really want the Striker II then go for it.
    -1000 RAM
-264 graphics/sound card of your choice
    -2 CD readers/writers
-160 GB hard drive............don't need to worry too much about internal hard drive size now as you can get terrabyte externals now (admittedly they are not cheap yet though).

I put the above desk top together a year and a half ago at the office so it's probably even cheaper now. That's generally OK for most stuff that I find myself doing but find myself more and more on a laptop these days.

I don't really care for bells and whistles, virus free and reliable is what I need.

And a reliable after sale service, no PC compatible I'm afraid.

Do you think a simple standard PC does need graphics and sound cards? I think that onboard graphics and sound are well good enough for most. I have the ASUS M3A MoBo which would allow me even to plug in two graphics cards for gaming if I would need that.

I would appreciate your informed opinion if and which plugin graphics card will do much for applications like photoshop.

For Photoshop you really don't need a graphics card. If you do anything with video or games, you'll want one. Sound from the MB is usually fine, but not great. If you're only playing MP3s of Wham!'s greatest hits, then it'll probably be ok without an additional sound card.

Thanks again. DVD-Video is fine for now but probably I will have another look if I put a BlueRay player in, maybe next year.

Onboard sound is good enough for my ears. However I have invested in a nice set of speakers by a local producer that is quite well known by audiophiles. Cost just below 10.000 Baht from Teufel (that would be devil in english).

The low bass from the subwoofer really shows when I look at DVD-Video. And it doesn't BOOM it produces a nice well balanced sub sound you can feel in the stomach.

better the lowest priced duo CPU in the lowest priced Asus motherboard.

to get reviews of the bits I normally look on newegg as you are likely to find something about most products there.
