    Mouthy Maori

    Firebrand MP trades email insults

By New Zealand correspondent Kerri Ritchie
Posted 4 hours 56 minutes ago
A politician from New Zealand's Maori Party is in hot water after he sent an expletive laden email to a kiwi voter.
Maori Party MP Hone Harawira has been under fire for skipping part of a taxpayer funded trip to Brussels so he could go sightseeing in Paris.
When Mr Harawira received an email from a member of the public, which criticised him and contained swear words, he fired one back.
He wrote: "White motherf****ers have been raping our lands and all of a sudden you want me to play along with their puritanical bullsh**."
New Zealand Prime Minister John Key says the language is deeply offensive.
"Hone is known for being a bit of a firebrand," he said.
Mr Harawira ended his email by saying "quite frankly I don't give a sh** about what you or anyone else thinks about it. Ok?"
He told the voter he did not care if he went to the media.

Another minor scandal from a Maori Party MP. Nothing new there. Almost expected.

MP sends foul email defending Paris trip

A New Zealand politician has sent an expletive-laden email to a voter who criticised him for ditching part of a taxpayer-funded work trip to go sightseeing in Paris.
Hone Harawira from the New Zealand Maori Party was supposed to be in Brussels attending a European parliamentary delegation meeting.
But Mr Harawira decided his time would be better spent in the city of love with his wife Hilda, so he skipped the last day of the work trip and boarded a train to Paris.
When word got out about the jaunt earlier this week, Mr Harawira argued he had done nothing wrong.
He said only a boring person would deny someone the chance to see the Eiffel Tower.
"New Zealanders all over the country would love to see that. I'm up there, why shouldn't I take that opportunity?" he said.
But one Maori Party supporter was not happy about picking up the tab for Mr Harawira's European adventure.
Buddy Mickaere wrote the MP an email and asked the politician why he wanted to go swanking around the world looking at white man icons in Paris.
Mr Harawira, however, fired back an email of his own.
"Gee buddy, do you believe that white man bulls**t too do you? White motherf***ers have been raping our lands and ripping us off for centuries and all of a sudden you want me to play along with their puritanical bulls**t," Mr Harawira said in his email.
"Quite frankly, I don't give a s**t what you or anyone else thinks about it. OK?"
Mr Mickaere says it was not quite what he expected from a member of parliament.
"I was surprised, and then I was actually quite insulted that he was taking this attitude, particularly when he was saying that he didn't give a monkey's for what I thought or anybody else thought," Mr Mickaere said.
At the end of the email, Mr Harawira told Mr Mickaere that he was free to go to the media, which is what he did.
"As a taxpayer, and someone who works just as hard as he says he does, and who ultimately ends up paying for what he does as an MP, I just thought it was pretty insulting all round," Mr Mickaere said.

    Colourful language

Mr Harawira is known for speaking his mind, often with colourful language.
This is also not the first time he has mixed business with pleasure. He got into trouble two years ago when he left a select committee meeting in Melbourne early so he could visit Aboriginal groups in Alice Springs.
In New Zealand, the Maori Party is one of the National government's coalition partners.
Prime Minister John Key, who this weekend celebrates a year in power, says the email is very offensive.
"He's not my member of parliament. He's not a member of the government," Mr Key said.
"In the end, it's for the Maori Party to take the action they think is appropriate.
"I just hope my MPs wouldn't send emails like that."
Mr Harawira is now having to face the music within his party, and he is finding there is not nearly as much love as there was in Paris.
The co-leader of the Maori Party, Tariana Turia, is far from happy. She was led to believe Mr Harawira became sick in Brussels and that was why he did not attend the final day of meetings.

Harawira sorry for language in email - Yahoo!Xtra News

Maori Party MP Hone Harawira has apologised for his language in a controversial email, but not the message .
Speaking on Radio Waatea today Mr Harawira apologised for the "poor choice of words" and the offence they caused when he referred to Pakeha as "white motherf...ers".
He should have instead referred to what European colonisers had done, he said.
He accepted his language had damaged Maori-Pakeha relations and he apologised for demeaning women.
The controversy had damaged his credibility and he would be doing "serious bridge building" with his caucus, he said.
Mr Harawira said he had no plans to leave the party.
The Maori Party leadership, prime minister, and Race Relations Commissioner Joris de Bres were among those who have called for an apology over his outburst.

    Called for an apology? Laughable.

People like this don't belong in government and destroy a lot of the good reputations that have been built up by many Maori over a long period of time.

He is an insult to successful Maori, more so than if some white trash had behaved in the same way.

"poor choice of words".... LOL this is getting better and better.

Most politicians are complete idiots, but very few show that quite so openly. I don't think congratulations are in order though. Still an idiot.

Unfortunately this so-called politician and member of a party representing the people suffers from the dreaded "chip on the shoulder" syndrome and should be sacked immediately.

Fortunately most Maoris and Islanders I have met and worked with are great people and don't need a twat like this bloke representing them.

Agreed Spin I liked it a fresh, gobby politician..funny as fook...Half a schkel for an ex-lepaaaaar...

I am however on the fence as to his political career....not a very good representative for the party...if your gonna speak your mind make sure you do it in circles of trust....

I do agree that yes the white man has raped many peoples land and many times not given equal opportunities...which is sad. I feel for many indiginous peoples all over the world...

True, this militant-revolutionary type is not reflective of the general characters of the Maori/Islander populations. But receives attention as one would expect from unconventional character. The Maori Sovereign Movement is only established in name and doesn't really have a great following as it would like. I'd wonder what such reaction would be within 'The Hive' if the odd White Supremacist were to extend such extreme commentary.

He would be out on his ear as should this bloke.

    And recently added...

Firebrand Maori Party MP Hone Harawira says he is unrepentant about saying Labour leader Phil Goff should be "shot" as he apologised for an offensive e-mail today.
This guy just doesn't know when to shut up. The John Galt of NZ.
