I think normal driving there wont be much smoke but when you floor it I guess it will be a bit of smoke until it spools up. I guess it will come down to good tuning. They will dyno my pickup at the end of the month before they start with the stage 2 kit and dyno after.
The car is as fast as a small V8 at the moment and with the big turbo intercooler and all the other stuff going on it is going to have some real tire smoking power. I will update that thread at the start of next month when all the mods are done

I'm not sure about getting it registered.........curious as to why you would want to go to all the trouble to put it in a Lancer ? Why not choose a RWD car ?

I like TE/TF Ford cortina's and mitsu Evo 2's, the mitsu i can get here (and add the evo bodykit).

Am open to suggestions for a smallish RWD car i can readily purchase for under 100k though (non Euro).

Might also add, i can get a tidy 94 lancer for 20k that has no motor or box, the actual build would be done at work as a "project" for my staff.

Rigger I'm looking forward to see how your truck turns out - I don't really know anything about tuning diesels. How strong are the stock internals on your motor ? What turbo are you using and what boost ?

Fondles the BMW E30 2 door is the best value IMO - I bought the red 2 door off racingweb with 1JZGTE, Nissan Skyline rear differential and brakes, Advan 17" wheels, original recaros, eibach springs and M Tec bodykit for 145K, you can buy a reasonable plain one for 80 on a good day. Weighs 1050 kg and still looks good today.

Sorry just reread your post - why non euro ? They are better than Jap cars IMO - its the motors where the Japs excel.

The stock engines are very strong from what I have been told and there are 300hp + chevy 2.5lts getting around in Bangkok. Will fitting td05h-16g with a modified housing to give better mid range and next to no lag and upgrading the intercooler to a Blitz,
not sure of the brand of waste gate he is fitting for me.
Anyway I plan to keep the car the height but am fitting project x race street suspention. I want it to look stock so I get more of a kick out of smoking boy races

On the other side of the coin, about 4 years ago I saw a superb early 1970's Mustang for sale at a place on Sukhumvit Rd Pattaya.

It had been wonderfully restored inside and out and I couldn't wait to see the engine. When the dealer opened the bonnet (hood for the deviants among us) there sat what I could only describe as a sewing machine engine.

The dealer proudly informed me that a 2.5 litre Toyota engine had been installed in place of the V8 lump as it was more economical.

My interest in the car ended right there!

I know exactly what you mean, I'm very much of the same opinion.

I love all this engine swap stuff when it's something slightly screwy or oddball but when it comes to what I'd consider 'classics' it's sacrilege to mess with them too much.

I was looking for a 450SLC Merc for ages and came across plenty of this sort of thing, most of the time you could tell from one glance at the price that it had a transplant.

Sacrilege - maybe to an extent but we have to find practical solutions in the place we are living. If you want a nice mustang on your driveway to admire and polish, and perhaps drive once a week to a classic car show or meet then I would agree. If you want a Mustang or any other classic to drive every day and have the same repair bills as a Corolla, then swapping a modern Japanese engine is the way forward IMO.

Three years ago I bought a Mercedes W126 and stuffed a Toyota 2JZ and LPG in it. I drove more than 100,000km with minimal problems before I sold it earlier this year for more than I paid for it. My neighbour from Norway has the same car with original 2.8 Benz engine and is a "purist", he said he couldn't live with his car not being original MB. His car is constantly off the road, and a couple of months ago he shelled out 90,000 baht to have the engine rebuilt, it still has a serious oil leak and a fault on the injection system. At the moment it is sitting on his drive covered in dust, and he's just bought a pick-up as a daily driver. He has long gone past the point of getting any pleasure from his car.

So, for me an engine swap is an intelligent solution, and means I can drive the car daily without breaking down and having huge bills and downtime.

    Cheers

^^Of course it's possible to have the best of both worlds - no way would I ever touch my 450SLC, but then I'd also be more than happy to tool around in something like a W123 sedan or estate with an engine swap.

And nothing I've said applies to BMW's in my mind either, for example your E30 project. Don't know why exactly, much less have any sort of rational reason for it, but when it comes to something like that it's the exact opposite in my mind and I'd only ever buy a transplanted Beemer.

Agree, I have a penchant for the old "four point tool eater" Jag XJ6, I drove one in BKK a few years back with a Toyota 2JZ VVTi engine, it was horrible, the engine just didn't suit the car, it was to smooth and high revving.

I have just parted with a beautiful '94 MB S500 with the original 5.0 V8, what a phenomenal car, I wouldn't have touched that if it had a jap motor. But the older W123's and Beemers - fair game - W124's are heading that way too.

Yep - I've noticed more and more of those turning up with transplants recently too. Some of them seemingly very nicely done.

I even met a guy whiles back that had done his own 'homemade' hydrogen fuel-cell conversion with plans he'd downloaded from the internet.

You could pick one from Union Auction for 70-80K if you're patient and persistent, or keep an eye on racingweb classifieds - they are out there but getting harder to find..........a couple of years ago there were loads around 100K......but nowadays for this price you will only get an old dog of a car and spend a fortune on it unless you're really lucky.

I think that at one point they were asking 690,000 for that triumph.

Almost certain it's the same one, there can't be that many yellow Triumphs around that's for sure.

    See, this:

a 450SCL with original engine (presumably) I would not touch. In fact I wouldn't even consider buying it if it had some sort of engine swap.

[Edit: incidentally that's pretty much spot-on to how my SLC will look when I'm finished, same wheels and everything. Thought long and hard but pretty much decided to go with black paint job over the original blue]

    But in comparison, this:

a 500SEL with a twin-turbo 2JZ I would actually really quite like. Even to the point that I'm seriously considering buying something exactly like it.

Does it make any sense, no I guess not.

I know where you're coming from.

That W126 is nice, the thing to watch is the rear diff ratios - if that car is originally a 500SEL the final drive ratio is only 2.47 which is far too low for the 2JZ. You need to swap out the diff for a 3.47 from the W123 200E, they are almost impossible to find in good (not whining) condition. Or you can buy a fcked one for 5K and spend 50K having it overhauled. They are a great car but very old - most cars came in used from the UK between 89-91, which is the date of registration in the book - but if you punch the details into the russian vin decoder

    Mercedes-Benz Club Russia | Mercedes-Benz / VIN

you find 95% of cars are manufactured 81-83 as they were imported here when 10 years old to minimise excise duties. That is nearly 30 years ago, and unless the owner has cherished the car and maintained it regardless of cost you will have a never ending series of age related problems - and no Thai who's spent big baht on his big Benz is going to sell it for 250K. Things like leaking rubbers, things snapping off etc, and getting bits is a PITA. I would look for a W124, although on looks alone, the W126 wins hands down. Every big saloon car since has taken something from the W126 - it is Mercedes design at its best in every respect. I sold one 3 months ago after using it extensively for 3 years, and enjoying every day of driving it, but towards the end it was getting pretty much worn out (a Thai bought it). That car was manganese brown when bought it (awful), I repainted that car in "travertine beige metallic" the latest MB light gold, and it looked good. Here is a link to my benzworld thread when I did the W126.

Labour of Love - my rebuilt W126 in Thailand (pics) - Benzworld.org - Mercedes-Benz Discussion Forum

As far as black goes, I would honestly say that I don't like it on the SLC - I have a friend who had a black left hand drive 450SL here and it didn't suit the car IMO - I would be inclined towards going with a lighter colour - silver, metallic blue or white. What colour are your interior carpets and plastics ?

    Cheers

Couple of videos that give some idea of the power of the 1JZ-GTE with a single turbo.
