^ Chav blogs should be enough for a northern ferret fondling monkey like you.
In internet terms, 1992 is a pretty long way back for a news item about the theft of a car to be archived. But something will turn up.
^But yet I found an article on my first google search about the incident that HAPPENED in Newcastle, the incident you refer to on those Chav blogs is an urban myth created from a real incident on Tyneside.![]()
It's all gone quiet.![]()
Hi
6 years on from your original posting, I stumbled across this thread.
I am certainly not a chav, but I did grow up in Ordsall, Salford and saw the police cosworth incident.
It was around May 1992 and an Ordsall lad, let's call him Kevin, was walking past Quicks Ford dealers in Old Trafford, near Salford, when he saw on the forecourt a Cosworth belonging to Oldham Police force. He nipped home and picked up his car stealing tools and went back, 'ballied up' as we say, and nicked said Cosworth. This was in the afternoon. An employee of Quicks saw the car being driven away and assumed it had been collected, post-service.
'Kevin' then teamed up with his mate 'Danny' who had in his possession a stolen black Mk2 Golf GTI that had a broken hatchback lid, meaning it spent it's stolen life being driven around with the boot up.
They hammered these 2 cars around Ordsall until it became too 'on top', meaning that every police car in Greater Manchester was in Ordsall looking for these cars.
In the evening they brought the 2 cars back out of hiding and raced them around. The main focus was in Phoebe Street, and this was video'd from a maisonette, upper floor, on Paddockfield (which is a housing unit at the northern end of Phoebe Street.
The cosworth did handbrake turns, reverse J turns, doughnuts, etc and as has been said, it was reversed down alleys to snap the doors backwards. It was then handbraked in the middle of Phoebe Street, in front of a 'Little Gem' minibus, and set on fire, with it's siren and lights going.
Later on, when the area was flooded with police, GMP's Astra GTE turned into the northern end of Phoebe Street and the amateur cameraman, whose identity everyone in Ordsall knows, said 'your next' as he focused on the GTE.
This incident certainly did happen, and was covered the next day by the Manchester Evening News, in the lunchtime edition with a colour picture of the burning car, and in the teatime edition with the same picture in black and white.
For years I kept both articles, but have since lost them. I also saw the video a few times as one of my mates had it.
I hope this clears it up, it was the talk of Ordsall for a long time.
Incidentally, not long after this, the Police Astra GTE was stolen from outside nearby Sunnyside Court, but was recovered almost immediately, and a short while afterwards a police transit van was stolen and joyridden around Langworthy Road, also in Salford.
It seems it's not new in Salford - in the early 80s someone I know very well pinched a marked Police Ford Capri and spent the evening racing that around.

Stick to original thread which if my memory serves me right was about a driver in Switzerland.
You're only 2 years late. Well done, Rodders.

My mistake, I saw your 'date joined' not your last posted date.
I've given you a bloody good description of the incident, I had hoped that the detail in my description and the correct use of english language might have shown you that I am a reliable witness. With a bit of luck some others who saw this incident might come along and back me up.
Also I have checked and central library in Manchester hold microfiche copies of the Manchester Evening News, so at some point I will take myself to said library and retrieve a copy for you.

That was indeed a sad day (date joined) for all of us here!Originally Posted by ordsallladfrom19992

At the time I was living in Contsance Gardens on Langworthy road and was mates with Bobby and Ian Spiers (RIP) I know its crap to name drop but yeah there was Paul Massey on the door at the Hacienda on a Saturday, used to get in there every week, FOC.Originally Posted by ordsallladfrom19992
That group of lads all had colour a4 print outs of the car that was on fire. I had a copy a long time ago, dunno where it went.
So just to check if you are genuine I want to to tell me what kind of wheels the Sierra Cosworth that was torched in Salford had on it.
Where they like this:

To Spin - No fella them's the old type wheels, these were the 4x4 ones. I get the feeling you're genuine off the estate and you and me both saw this with our own eyes. You know who Kevin and Danny really are, proper double act back then. Pisses me off when people think you're telling porkies.
Well here's the proof. I took my arse to the library and found this

I'm not from Manchester, and lived there for just two years,I never saw the car itself, only the printed photos, the guy who gave it to me, what was his name? Eddie Taylor? big lad, quite a character.
I don't know of these two guys Kevin and Danny, I may have met them briefly, hanging around with Ian and Bobby, you tended to meet some real nutters![]()
Grew up in Ordsall, I was 16 in 92 knocking around with some right characters off the estate. Kevin & Danny are obviously not their real names, but everyone knows who they are.
Ordsall was rough as fuck back then, no suprise that that's where the Cos ended up.
Fun times as a kid, glad I don't bring my kids up there though!
Glad I was able to provide the newspaper cutting.
Oh dear, Spin if you and your rather overweight mod boyfriend are going to delete my posts then why ask me to reply?
Now keep talking to your chav double nick you have invented, it suits you.![]()
