    Respiratory infection going round?

Just curious if anyone has had anything like a dry cough lately. A doctor told me I have brochitis. I have had a cough at times during the day and a bit during the night for a few weeks now which I thought would go away but didn't. Now I am taking a few medicines for it. I hope it works because it can be quite a hassle to deal with this at times. I also know of a few other people who have had a hard to get rid of cough. And I read in another post that there might be something going around so I'm curious if anyone has had anything or knows of someone who has.

Well, the doctor took an xray and said it wasn't swine flu. But who knows?

What you describe appears to be a bacterial infection that has been going around - if it's the same thing I have had, it responds quite well to antibiotics. The cough generally turns worse, and then turns into a headache. There's a real risk of it migrating into conjunctivitis (into your eyelids).

Get yourself some amoxicillin, 500mg, and take it twice a day, for 7-10 days. If it's bacterial, you should notice feeling better within a day -- YOU STILL NEED TO TAKE THE FULL 7-10 REGIMEN OF ANTIBIOTICS, REGARDLESS, ONCE YOU STARTED.

If you don't notice getting better within 1-3 days (maximum) then what you have is viral and the antibiotics will do absolutely nothing (except to prevent a secondary bacterial infection in your lungs). Nevertheless, if the doctor has diagnosed bronchitis, it's a good chance at being what I described.

If you end up getting pink eye out of it, with yellow discharge and sticky eyelids in the mornings, get some tobramycin eye drops, and apply every 2-4 hours. That will clear it up within 2-3 days. Otherwise, you will drag it along for 2 weeks to a month. (note, the throat irritation will last a week or so beyond recovery).

Whole family has it as well...
Hard cough and have to spit that greenish jeliish fluid after the cough.
If i take antibiotics goes better, but i took sporadically and it remains, near one month now!

A friend just told me antibiotics are not good in case of a virus, bit lost a the moment on what to intake, if it lasts one month, it would be good it respects the schedule, done the time!

Nothing for it but rest and the nebulizer if it is a really bad viral respiratory infection. My kid spent four nights in hospital last week with what the docs thought was viral pneumonia (he has recovered nicely after a couple of scary nights). There were other kids in with it. I thought my kid was having a recurrence of the allergy-related coughing he used to suffer, so we delayed taking him to hospital. Bad move. Especially if you have kids, be careful, there is some kind of respiratory virus going around (might always be around, who knows).

Started off in June with a dry night cough and it went on to get really deep in my chest, so off to the doc and altho it was a virus got some broad spec anti-b's as he said it was common to see a secondary infection follow on from this particular bug.
Said that it was important at this time to be on the watch for any problems as if the piggy flu was to hit me this would not be good at all.
Still got a bit of the cough even now - at nights mostly.
And by the way had my pig flu shots last Monday.

Then you are an idiot. You don't take antibiotics 'sporadically'.

Had this, I think it is the flu, which causes a secondary infection. Swine flu is said to attack the lungs and of course that opens you up to secondaries. I took an amoxicillin based antibiotic but it failed to clear it. Had to use a "mycin" type instead (I forget the name), which worked. It hit me hard, sickest I've been for a long time.

Great, with school resuming soon, something to look forward to.
My GF works at an international school and they're not shy about sending kids home if sick, even though parents are paying a bundle.

I work at a Thai private school, and kids walking around with green jelly oozing out their noses is not an uncommon site, as is coughing and sneezing without covering one's mouth etc. Furthermore, Thai teachers suffer an elaborate absentee policy, that requires multiple signoffs and ultimately a thumbs up/down from the head honcho to determine if their pay is docked for taking a sick day. But those germ masks and alcohol gel will protect them!

The drugs I got seem to have worked for me. It's been a few days since I finished and the coughing is mostly gone. Keeping away from cold liquids and using less air conditioning also helped.
