I don't know what your profession is and how much you have to fall back on. It really depends where you are and what you do that effects how much work is available to people.

To say it's not hard to find a job is bollocks in my immediate area and after talking to most of the people I left behind - they all paint a miserable picture. but I suppose there all miserable people.

    No profession as such.

Just really didn't want the job. Didn't want it before I even got there

    What car did you buy?

I looked at a diesel C3 today. Same engine that is in the C1 and C2. Which I find a bit odd for a larger car.

They wanted 140 a month on tick for four years for it. 5k on the clock, not bad, shite customer service though.

On leaving though I saw there supply of C1's around the corner, 99 quid a month. If I whacked a couple of grand down that I would put on the C3 it would be 70 quid month, plus another 70 to chuck towards fuel for the horrendous 80 mile days I have coming up

Toyota Yaris 1.3L from a family member so didn't really have much choice but the price and milage it was worth it - Insured on real cheap also but with one drawback, it's a fucking automatic so there will be no fun in driving it. It will just feel like a basic go-kart.

If that wasn't available I would have gone for a diesel hatchback - cheaper fuel and slightly more reliant if has a higher milage.

Not to do with the visa, that's all in hand.

Im looking at renting/buying a house. If I rent a house and the wife lives in it with me does she have to pay anything towards the dreaded council tax?

the council tax is levied whenever there are 2 or more people in the house

if sole occupancy, you get a 25% discount (that may be different in different councils)

Council tax is levied on the house, not the number of occupants. DrA is correct for the single occupancy.

Check your rental agreement as occasionally this is included within the rent.

If you are a full time student, your wife shouldn't be counted as she would come under the category of being the foreign spouse of a student.

Most FE colleges would let you enrol on a course full time. has to be 20 hours a week.

My council initially wanted to make me pay for her living with me, but then realised she had no recourse to public funds and decided it was ok to put her in the foreign spouse of a student category.

Really? Sounds like it could be an avenue as I was thinking of doing some sort of course while I was here anyway.

    Whats an FE College?

Further Education College - places where people can do A-Levels, GNVQ's, degree stuff

Depending on your income it's free or bugger all for the course.

I think if you sign on as unemployed, you can get on the courses at a greatly reduced rate. Nothing to do with income, in that situation

unless they have changed the rules!

They will provide funding up to a certain amount, I think £300. Why anyone would give up a full time job to get discounted rates on a college course so their wife doesnt end up paying council tax escapes me

signing on does not give you any money

it is a way of finding a job

to get money you have to prove that you have little or no money, a different thing

I used to sign on when I was a student, in the holidays, so that I could attend AE courses at reduced rates (I learnt Italian, for instance)

the only other benefit I got was that they paid my NI stamp
    I have reported your post

    Nothing more complicated than that.
Must have changed in the last year or so then? When my wife applied, along with the many others that were applying at the same timem she was required to attend an interview at the Job Centre Plus - and not the local one - we had to travel a good few miles. She was then asked various questions, asked to provide some evidence she had been applying for work (which she had) and I have to confess, I intervened when needed. The guy was quite helpful, but no committment was made as to whether she would get the NiNo or not. The details the clerk took then had to be passed to a more senior officer to decide. About 2 weeks later the NiNo came through.

Now I could have pointed out that this was all a charade and she qualified, but I didn't want to do so. That would come later if needed. If it has changed, I'm sorry to hear that, I actually think it should be harder, but thats a different story and to do with the day job.
Having just done this meself I have to say that squirrel is right.

If you have a spousal visa then they just send some forms and you send them back with a copy of the visa.

I think your wife needs a certificate from a hospital to show she is all clear. It was introduced about four years ago, and im pretty sure its still in operation.

2,600, jeysus. Yet another cost to add, to the ever spiralling visa prices. Thank god all this is behind us now.

    Good luck with it all.

Just been reading the Thailand-UK forums bit about building a folder and noticed a few things.

One is providing and English translation of the wifes birth certificate, do they need this?

Also the same for the birth certificates of all children regardless of whether they are travelling.

Full certified copy of my passport?

The info on there seems like its 4 years out of date for this sort of stuff

She took the TB test the other day and passed. She said out of 8 people 3 ended up failing.
