Sending a parcel to Thailand???HELP

hi everyone, not sure if this is the right place to post this??,but anyway,as my girlfriend is comming back to thailand in october,we are sending some clothes etc back,now we have done this a couple of times with no problem,but this time we have sent a 22kg box of clothes, with DHL as we have done in the past,but recived this e-mail today.........

With reference to the above airwaybill number, the shipment you have sent to xxxxxxxx in Thailand on 7th August 2009 (your reference xxxx), the consignee has refused to pay the duties and taxes that are due on this shipment and has therefore refused delivery.

I have been asked to check if you are willing to accept the duties and taxes of $184.24 USD (£111.46 GBP) on behalf of the consignee. I must add that these duties are not imposed by DHL, but by the customs in Thailand.

Can you please reply to me by 12 noon 14th August 2009, as this will prevent the shipment being automatically returned if we have nad no reply.

on giving the M.I.L a call she tell us that she had a phone call from some doggy thai wanting her mobile number and wanting her to meet her away from the office and her house,which she declined,i have since been in touch with DHL here to say we would pay it this end and wating the out come,why do you have to pay this as none of the items were new??? it cost £80 already to send so its an expensive parcel,do any of you send parcels to thailand, and who have you found the best to use from uk??,and is this the norm having to pay customs as we have a few more to send,any help would be great.

DHL are a bunch of thieving kunts. Use FedEx or better still just the normal post office service in future.

I can't say whether your particular case is dodgy or not (the meeting away from office etc sounds a bit off).

However, I regularly get packages (work related), and yes, the goods are often assessed for customs duty, which (in the cases we have had) are legit.

One point to bear in mind (which pisses me off no end) is that customs is assesed on the value of the merchandise AND the cost of the shipment.

When you fill in the paperwork, assess everything at the lowest possible value ( I asume you are sending the goods with a customs declaration?) -otherwise they may make the value up themselves....

(and, in my past experiences, it IS customs dept that is whapping the charge, not DHL/Fed-ex whatever - however, given this is Thailand, others experiences may differ...).

normal.

I've had some problem. its customs wanting extra money.

1. you pay it.

2. you refuse, then they keep it for a week and then charge you additional storage fees to same value they wanted before.

3. you refuse, ask them to open and check that the items are 'old' and they then charge you an additional handling fee, to teh same value as they wanted before.

4. see meets dodgy thai at coffee shop, he offers to get stuff out for half the cost, you pay this and a) get your stuff back or b) get nothing back

imo shipping company should pay this anyway.

ime they wont.

yes DHL/UPS I have all had trouble with with holding parcels until large somes of money where handed over not every time but a couple . USPS has been very good the last 12 months, sure I still have to pay but a lot less and no scam e mails

DO NOT USE FEDEX - Fedex does not have their own office, but uses 'local affiliates' - who tried to steal a shipment of mine previously.

DHL has their own offices and facilities, and the stuff I send gets there.

Dodgy customs official wants tea money, essentially, which is why they have set the customs and duty costs to be that high - they would settle for less 'under the table'.

This has happened to me at one point previously, with customs blocking a shipment, claiming it is not 'approved for shipment to Thailand', and then through a backchannel asking for $400 tea money - since it was ridiculous for a shipment worth $150,I asked for Fedex to return the shipment. This took 3 months, as the local Thai Fedex affiliate did nothing for 3 months, and when I finally received it back, there were $600 in charges for 'import then export duties' added to the shipment.

Thai customs - the most corrupt organization in the Kingdom - though DHL is still your best bet.

Next time, post in a public section of the forum.

the goods were put down on the customs invoice at £100,so the charge is more than what we said the box was worth,the doggy thai was told by the MIL,it was her daughters old clothes,and sounded a bit miffed she said, and still waiting to here back from dhl as how to pay it,mmmmmmm!!!!,but will keep you informed,and cheers again for your help dafy duck

Do not forget, as I said, the charge is based on the cost of goods PLUS cost of shipping (80 quid I think you said)....

With DHL I have had to meet them before at arranged rendevous points as they couldn't find my place, seems quite normal for them even when I had offices and that, never had to pay duty or anything though but I put that down to luck.

I do not know why anyone would wish to run the gauntlet of Thai Customs and / or shippers like DHL.
It is a thankless task and will only end in grief.
If the clothes are worth sending home she should hand carry them, you can bring anything in through customs this way.

Not true

Anything is possible here, I have had motorcycle engines and frames plus loads of other stuff, if its a large or expensive item over 500 USD use a import export company, Always have postal insurance on items. Last 2 years I have received about 200 parcels and out of that I guess 4 disapeared, 4 I got the pay me email, and a few turned up 3 months late. so it aint that bad
Like I said before USPS has been the best so far, in cost of shipping and for some reason when it comes to paying import tax

low and behold the parcel arrived today,with no charge either end so far,on speaking with dhl (this end) they said there could still be an invoice sent out,so we will wait and see.but at least it got there unopened.

These items fly under the radar better at customs and excise.

I wish to aquire a small camera that I can't find here in Thailand. What is the best way to get the camera? have someone buy if for me in the states and ship it to me . Whats the best way to do that ? Or order it through Amazon ?

I really am concerned about the theft. I think I have already three book parcel orders and package mailed to me from northern Thailand stolen. All within a one month period of time.

I am totally beside myself and rather put off with the Thai postal system lately.

Same as suggested earlier -- have it shipped via DHL. Have someone in the US buy it for you, then ship to you.

You may be dinged for import duties.

Parcels at the normal post office are sent by DHL here because DHL is a company of Deutsche Post. Maybe that explains why they are a bunch of what you said.

Yes, that would make the efficient, and effective - which is what DHL has proven when I sent stuff with them to Thailand several times. Can't say the same for Fedex, which lost six of my packages, and and then wouldn't return a package Thai customs tried to extort tea money from, for over 6 weeks.

It finally took me sending someone physically to their office with a message to, suddenly, get the package returned the very next day. Fedex are a bunch of incompetent fuckers, both in the US, as well as in Thailand.

So I have bought a not inexpensive watch and had it sent here to NZ but it looks like it will be delayed so I have to get it sent on to Thailand. I've had plenty of stuff come in through Thai Post but I would rather use something where it gets delivered and signed. I can insure it with fed ex for what I paid and it is $100 NZ to send which I can take on the chin but will be mightily pissed if it doesn't make it. There is a local mob that does the delivery in our area. Am I foked? I had a new credit card come in with them no prob's but something they can pocket and flog later....Any ideas? Is it really that dodgy?
