    A vitual treadmill race thread

I've got a treadmill but it bores the crap out of me plodding along on it. I try to do 5km most days but often I get so bored that I stop at 3.2km.

I have tried watching TV (Beeb news, Law and Order, Monk, O'Reily) and podcasts of Rachel Maddow and music that seem to be on about the time I exercise (usually around 10 am Thai time) but while they are usually enjoyable they are not really motivating.

If anybody else here is trying to get fit(ter) on a treadmill perhaps it would be fun and encouraging to post details of the jog/run that you do.

I guess it would take the form of something like this:

    2 min at 7.5 km/h warm up
    15 min at 9.5 km/h jogging
    4 min at 7.5 km/h walking
    6 min at 9.5 km/h jogging
    4 min at 7.5 km/h walking/recovering
3 min at run-as-fast-as-you-can-for-a-while km/h to set personal best time

I think I got to the 5 km mark at about 33:42, but I could be wrong because the above timings are taken from my exercise this morning and I didn't write them down.

I find the tread mill boring as fuck too. At the gym I go to the tread mills over look the tennis courts. When there's a decent match on its not too bad.

Sorry, cant remember my exact routine, I always just try to get to 5km before 25mins or below.

Invite a couple of Soi dogs into the room, rev up a motobike with fish sauce on the exhaust, and paint dog crap onto the treadmill that you have to dodge. Then its just like the real thing.

I have one big beast of a treadmill standing in the guest house, looks real prof standing there all alone most of the time, a couple of times a year I go nuts on the thing and uses it 3 times a week for a couple of month's then I somehow get sidetracked

I find it difficult to understand why things like treadmills and exbikes are worthwhile

much better to get out and run, or bike somewhere

    you do not get bored

Treadmills are much lower impact compared with hitting the pavement, and weather friendly. Agree with the boredom factor. Whoever made that remark about the loneliness of the long distance runner was right. I use them for warm-ups and interval training. You won't catch me doing hour-long cardio on them.

I tried to go out for early morning runs but its near bloody impossible on the streets of Bangkok. I'd get up at quarter to six and be out by six but you spend your whole time dodging food carts and mini buses. Then there are loads of places where the footpath is completely blocked and you have to dip onto the road and avoid on coming cars. If I lived near a park then I'd choose that over the tread mill but the closest decent sized one to me is Asoke which is 5 stops on the skytrain from me and I don't want to travel home from there sweating like a scouser in Dixons.

That's pretty quick, may I ask how old you are and if you smoke?

I've been using my treadmill for almost a year now on and off and I still haven't been able to get under 30 minutes for 5k, 32 and change is the best I have done

Sure, but around my house the roads don't really have pavements so you are running on the hard shoulder which isn't much fun and the soi dogs are a hassle also. Plus it's bloody hot.

They don't call it a treadmill fer nothin'. I try and do an hour on it 4 days a week. I figure getting through the hour as being a test of will. It's killer though. I just do it for cardio, very low impact. Me knees are shot so I have to walk the hour away to get to 5 kms. It's a chore. God, I'm depressed now...
    ... anyone got a light??
