    Feeling Lethargic: lack of energy

Lately, I've lacked energy both mental and physical.

    Some background:

*Drinking a lot less. Some nights no booze, other night 3-4 small cans/bottles of beer at a local watering hole.

*Not taking vitamins anymore (ran out). So, no vitamins, no minerals.

*Eating local Asian food about 3 times per day in small amounts.

*Not exercising at all, except for walking.

*Sleeping about 8-9 hours per night, with a 1 hour nap in the day.

    I feel lethargic. Mostly mental.

    Any similar experiences? Possibly remedies?

I get some occasionally. I know where to go. But I don't boom-boom as much as I used to. I'm getting older and the testosterone isn't as high as it was, I think.

    So, that hasn't changed.

This feeling of 'lack of energy' started more than a week ago.

I feel slow in the head. Maybe I'm sleeping too much.

Milkman, if you spent as much time actually doing something about your health as you did posting online about it you would be very similar to superman.

Does seem you are getting too much sleep. 10 hours a day is a bit much.

    Are you gaining weight?

I read a study recently that suggested that people sleeping, on average, 8hrs per night actually have shorter life expectancies than those getting 5-6hrs.

As a chronic insomniac that actually gave me some measure of comfort; take that you easily-to-dose-off-focker!

Over 1 lt of beer and you are "drinking less" ? How much were you drinking before ?
Besides you can afford 4 beers (= 150/250 baht) but you can't afford to buy vitamins at the nearest pharmacy ? (100 Vitamin C = 30 baht)

Funny you should say that. I read an article that a university in the north of England ( forget which ) did a study and concluded that lazy people live longer than more active types. They could give no scientific explanation for their results except to say that it seemed that we are a bit like clockwork machines in as much as that increased activity causes us to unwind quicker.

As for milkman I can only say I feel the same. You didn't mention your age so its hard to say but as you get older you just can't carry on at the same pace. I find the less I do from day to day, the less I can do from day to day. The heat doesn't help much either. I usually feel a lot more active on my annual trips home to the U.K.

I started eating smoked salmon 3 to 5 times a week and taking Omega 3. I feel it has helped my mind.

I also am doing a ton more reading than I used to - 5 to 6 books a week. I am trying to up my Thai language practice as well.

All of it combined has helped me to improve my mental abilities.

You need to develop a different mental attitude of positive thinking. Think young and your mind will be young. Wake up and "act as if" - act as if the day is going to be the best of your life. Act as if you have energy. Spring out of bed with energy and excitement.

Force yourself to do these things and they will become routine. Your mind is powerful and your body will realize results.

Believe it or not, it works.

I did that once. Fell down and couldn't get up.

Now I slowly walk to the kitchen. Drink a couple litres of good strong coffee and I'm good to go for the day.

Best go see the doc and get a medical check over.
There's at least a thousand possible causes for such lethargy. A medical check up should at least find or eliminate the most common ones.

^Always the right thing to do. I know I'm beginning to sound like a broken record on this subject because I had a non functioning thyroid at 40. Symptoms MM describes are the same. Will have rapid weight gain as well.

Fook 10 hours a day sleep...........I average around 5 hours sleep per day and have done so for the last 20 years.

Mental fatigue or just plan boredom can affect your physical well being so look at getting involved with something or someone exciting.

I used to feel like that a few years ago, but I feel pretty good nowadays. I would put it down to a better diet now that the Midget is looking after me and cooking 3 proper meals a day. I also drink a lot less than I used to.

Try going dry for a month or so and eating lots of fresh veggies, no crap like Coke or Pepsi and forcing yourself into a proper sleeping pattern that doesn't change (even at the weekend).

Diet, exercise, sleep are the baseline requirements for a healthy bod.
But hours of sleep required vary from individual to individual. Some people need only 4 hours sleep to be totally refreshed and others need up to 10. I am in the average bracket and need around 8. One of the common things that can really mess around with quality sleep is "sleep apnea". Quite common in overweight middle aged males, especially heavy drinkers.

Just one of many possibilities worth looking at.

    True.

    It's about priorities. My fault.

    No, not gaining; not losing.

    Weight is the same.

    I don't think I easily doze off.

Lately I have been feeling tired, earlier in the evening.

This is why I started the thread.

Maybe it's because I'm nearing 40. But I suspect my stopping of activity is linked to it, and also a lack of a well-rounded diet at the moment.

Before. It depended. Up to 10 large Tiger beers per day. Big ones. But I reduced it to about 7-8. I have also included vodka 1/2 shots during the Tiger beer sessions.

And I reduced this about 1 month or about 6, 7 weeks ago.

I'm having vitamins shipped to me. They should arrive in a couple of days.
