Thread: Download codec pack minus the bugs ?

Hi,

I have been trying to download a codec pack so that I can watch movies in AVI format. The last few movies I downloaded would not even play in VLC and someone told me to install a codec pack like Codec Pack +
Trouble is, every time I try to download a codec pack there seems to be either a virus, trojan or adware attached to it. Does anyone know where I can find a "clean" codec pack to download ? There must be one out there somewhere.

Just had the same problem. The movie I downloaded came with its own Codec Pak. The readme file suggested viewing with VLC. If there where any problems to install the Codec Pak then try again. When I attempted to install the Codec Pak alarms went off in McAfee. I also tried other Codec's on the CNet site, that are virus/spyware tested. But no go. So I wrote it off as some dodgy crap someone uploaded and removed it.

I tried to download codecs from what I thought were trusted sites and every one had my Bitdefender going off. I was warned about this, but did not realise how dodgy they were.

Use the GSpot tool in the K-Lite codec pack to find out which codec you need.

Which sites were you using?


Any movie that can't be played in VLC and requires you to use a special codec is just trying to fool you into installing their malware. Even when you do, they'll be crappy quality rips and not worth watching.

Have you ever heard of MediaInfo ? I just downloaded it and am working out how to use it but it looks good. Once you have downloaded it you just right click on a movie and MediaInfo is in the list that pops up, then you click on "MediaInfo" and it gives you information about the movie and where to get the correct codec for that movie. Worth having a look at.

K-Lite should cover all AVI movies. Plan B is right. If the AVI movie itself is trying to get you to download something it is malware.

I don't seem to have any problems with movies from Minninova, but I tried another site called "Bitenova" and not 1 movie from them would play in VLC.
Also tried a site called "Torrent Portal" and none of them would play either.
I used to use "Isohunt" / Axxo torrents but for the last 2 weeks or so when I try to download a torrent a window appears saying
"Could not open 'axxo-3.torrent' It does not appear to be a torrent file."
A pity, because that was a good site, and Axxo had heaps of good movies. Hope to find another like it.

This bears repeating. If you have installed the "codec" required to play an .avi with VLC then you should unplug you machine from any public network and get to work cleaning it up.

yes - I will repeat it again also
if VLC or Klite mega pack will not play the file it is a dud
AVI is a container and not a codec
