Best tip I ever got for LOS was the first day I arrived.

I`d met an expat from Chiang Mai,on the plane and he`d agreed to show me around Bangkok/,Pat Pong, that evening. We left arrivals and headed straight for the cafe.Whilst having a coffee,my new friend bought a packet of Thong Thip and promptly threw the cigerettes away.He then refilled the packet with his Benson & Hedges. When I asked what he was doing,he told me that when we went to Pat Pong that night, the bar girls would see him smoking the cheap Thai cigerettes and assume he had no money/end of holiday/expat living in Thailand. He was 100% correct, the girls left us pretty much alone.....

Always remember this list was compiled by mostly old, feeble, worn out farang men who have largely forgotten how to throw caution to the wind, be vibrant, happy and carefree while visiting somewhere new.

Have a fukkin blast -- that's what you came here for. Dance, get drunk and laugh a lot. You'll be glad you did.

Oh yeah, forgot this one, tell them to look both ways before crossing a road to avoid being run down by a rouge motorcycle going the wrong way down a street (especially at night with no lights on )

^ Are red motorbikes more dangerous?

Exactly what you want on your first night in Thailand in Patpong, girls avoiding you because they think you have no money.

I can just picture this young confused guy staring desperately at groups of young, nubile and willing Thai girls sticking their hands down the pants of other tourists, and the old codger turning him to him with a satisfying know-all smile and saying..

"See how the girls keep away from us because they think we have no money, great isn't it."

I have never heard of 210 --one wire electrical. Most houses in the US have Romex 2 wire which is--black, white and a ground. Room heaters can cook you out of a room IF the Main Panel Box is wired correctly. Breakers are 15amp in my music studio, 20amp for water heaters. What is one wire 210? a black and a ground? The plug for my laptop is two prongs and a ground? Very conusing.

whilst your list is very commendable and wise SEATr, it seems just a normal list applicable to any country, any journey

    nothing Thai specific at all

some of the additions were, but hardly suitable for your oldish friends

just tell them to come, relax and have a good time

With a Thai wife your friend should have no qualms and at their age probably won't be going to places where they can be taken advantage of. Hell, relax and have a good time, don't get shit faced and show your ass, the wife should already know about bargaining. I never mastered the elephant track shitters and found banana leaves less than necessary but better than nothing for wipes.

    - Look both directions very carefully before stepping off the curb .. they drive on the "wrong side" here in TL. (almost stepped in front of a tour bus one day in C'mai)

    - Raising your voice will not make your questions/requests/complaints easier for Thais to understand.

    - Never try to ask for a banana in Thai.

LOTS OF GOOD ADVICE HERE - JUST A COUPLE I WOULD LIKE TO ADD.
Read again about rip off Police at Suvanabhumi airport who have a dodgy deal going with the duty free shops ( ie don't go into duty free shops at BKK airport - I have just come back and read the warning here before I left , this scam was reported several times in local Thai papers.
When asked is this first time in Thailand answer is no , I come before many times! ( eg. first cab trip BKK to Pattaya 2500 bht , best now 800 plus highway.
Touts at airporrt "where are you going sir " ? answer : " sorry secret" ( they haven't found an answer to this one yet).
Long queue for taxi's at arrivals area , go to departures level , plenty of anxious empty cabs leaving.
Only ever use metered cabs. eg. tout at bus station best price 200bht , metered cab 80bht.
Don't drive anywhere in Thailand ( red lights are only a suggestion - can turn left anytime through red light.)
If you hire a Car or M/bike photograph it and the hirer together from evey angle with the date and time obviously displayed . ( amazing the ammount of damage that happens after you hire the vehicle?)
DON'T BE PUT OFF BY ANY OF THIS , THAILAND IS JUST THE SAME AS THE REST OF THE WORLD WHEN IT COMES TO NEWBIES YOUR FAIR GAME! - ( EG INDIAN AND LEBANESE TAXI DRIVERS IN AUSTRALIA).
