    Baht too strong says chamber

    Baht too strong says chamber
    2/06/2009

The baht is currently too strong at 34 to the US dollar and the Bank of Thailand should step in to stabilise it at a realistic rate, Archava Taolanond, honorary chairman of the Thai Chamber of Commerce, said on Tuesday.

Mr Archava suggested the central bank maintain the currency at a suitable rate of 37 baht the US dollar.

That would give the export sector a much needed boost.

Asked about the government’s policy to replace price-pledging for agricultural products with a price insurance system, Mr Archava said it was a good idea because it would free up budget funding for other projects.

He stressed, however, that any price insurance scheme must be totally transparent and free of corruption.

Well, if we're going to that route - why not 47bht? Like the good old days.

My bad BG and I appologize profusly as I must have had my head up my ass. Try January 1998. Mea Culpa!!!! I hope yu can read the yellow and red font below because it does reflet the fact and I know that all of us on this forum strive for the facts in every case.

See the following quote: "Forex issues: From the end of World War II until 1980 the Baht was pegged to a USA Dollar at an exchange rate of twenty Baht to a USA Dollar. A strengthening USA economy caused Thailand to repeg its currency at 25 to the USA Dollar from 1985 until July 2, 1997, when the country was stung by the Asian financial crisis. The Baht was floated and halved in value, reaching its lowest rate of 56 to the Dollar in January 1998. It stabilized again at a rate of about 40 per Dollar, where it has since remained. Before 1880 the exchange rate was fixed at eight Baht per Pound sterling, falling to ten to the Pound during the 1880s." From the first para at this URL: http://www.lonympics.co.uk/new/Thai_bah.htm

Yes, that is correct, but I have been here steady for 9 years and I did get 47 once or twice,,45 a number of times as well as 43 and as low as 30 I do believe, but do not pay much attention to it anymore as I am going to get what they give and no more and am not leaving because of what ever it is or might be..
