    Pollution / smog control on cars

    I was told last evening that only the US requires pollution / smog control equipment on cars.
    & that pollution control results in a 50% decrease in fuel efficiency.
    That a BMW (we were talking BMWs) gets twice the fuel efficiency as the same model with pollution / smog control.

    Do cars in Thailand have pollution control?
    Same as EU? (do EU cars have smog control?)
    as long as there are tests, there will be prayers in public schools.

    In UK it is part of the annual MOT at 3 years old.The Isuzu I have has all the same gear on it except for a particulate filter(it is a diesel) which is required to meet the latest emmissions and all the new petrols appear to be same as UK speck.*Is is probably cheaper to do this than have a special ECU for each market. The diesel particulate filter is cleaned off only at high speeds,and if you only run round town they soot up and the fuel consumption goes up dramatically

    Before posting the question I googled & wiki-ed smog control to little avail.

    was hoping the international composition of this forum could help with the national (political) policies requiring devices / special engineering requirements placed (by politicians) on auto manufacturers.
    & the gas / diesel consumption effects of those legislative (political) requirements.

    in the US, a German car requires a huge investment to be made 'street legal'.

    engine design used for protectionism not for improving air quality.

    does the Mazda plant in Chon Buri produce different engines for Thai, Oz, EU & US markets?

    you correctly IDed my (questionable) question.
    what a night mare for manufacturers. Different engine designs for each country.

    I continue to wonder about what the different requirements do for gas / diesel consumption ..
    if variable clean air legislation (political) results in more fuel consumption or increased auto / design costs
    this has to be a nightmare for auto manufacturing in this globalized industry.
