Exclamation Wikileak: Britain training death squads in Bangladesh

    UK training Bangladesh 'death s
British officials in Bangladesh have confirmed Wikileaks reports that the UK is training a police force in the country accused of being a death squad.
Rapid Action Battalion members have been taught "interviewing techniques" and "rules of engagement" by the UK authorities, said the leaked cables.
One message says the US would not offer tactical training to the RAB because of its alleged human rights violations.
UK officials told the BBC the focus of the training was on human rights.
Set up in 2004, the 9,000-strong RAB is accused of more than 550 killings.
The whistle-blowing website Wikileaks has obtained a cache of about 250,000 US diplomatic cables, which it has released to several newspapers, including the Guardian.
In a cable dating from May 2009 published by the Guardian, the US ambassador to Dhaka, James Moriarty, writes: "The US and UK representatives reviewed our ongoing training to make the RAB a more transparent, accountable and human-rights compliant paramilitary force.
"The British have been training RAB for 18 months in areas such as investigative interviewing techniques and rules of engagement."
In another cable, Mr Moriarty notes it would be illegal for the US to offer anything other than human rights training to the RAB because of the force's alleged crimes.

No, no surprises, that's what UK plc do best. Good on Wikileaks though, this is what it's all about, revealing these insidious bastards plying their trade.

There is no factual basis in which to make the claim that the UK is training death squads. The UK is trying to train the Bangladeshis in proper interrogation techniques.

You're a bunch of hypocrites. The USA which most of you regularly bash and criticize indicates a hesitancy for the training and you latch onto it as it being the gospel truth and a means to piss all over the UK. Are you going to bash Australia for training Indonesian police despite the US reluctance? Are you going to bash Canada for training Haitian police?
Get a grip. The only way to stamp out human rights abuses by the police is to train them properly and to educate them. That's what the UK is doing. Do any of you have a more constructive suggestion to improve the quality of policing in Bangladesh?

Have to agree in this case. The thread headline is totally out of line, intimating intent to train death squads, which is bullshit. Training a police force, accused by some to be a death squad (which it probably is), in interviewing techniques and rules of engagement (quotes used to intimate a dark side to what is probably simply an attempt to improve the police) seems like a good idea.

No basis at all to claim negative intent. Challenged Gribbs is scraping the bottom of the barrel now... isn't he always...

No, but my great-uncle was held as POW by the UK during WW2, and was subjected to forced labor and mistreated. Barak Obama's grandfather was held in British concentration camp and tortured in Kenya.

How to capture your enemy without killing everybody and how to torture them without them dying before a confession is made.

I don't want to come off as being rude and cold, I trule have sympathy for all victims of violent crime, but your uncle was an occupier in Kenya. He represented a racist and brutal empire power that raped and pillaged a sovereign people. We in the US morally oppose Bush and his crimes for the most part, while the British hold Churchill as a hero. Bush was actually a choir boy compared to Churchill, who brought death and despair to millions of people in multiple continents because he considered them primitive because of the hue of their skin tone.

It doesn't say who is doing the training, SIS MI6 SAS PARA ?

A think tank from Scotland Yard..? Not likely.

Bottom line, the use of UK forces in Bangladesh was a a secret.
Why? Who exactly is involved? What is the hidden agenda?
