Same here. I'm not chauvinistic on these things, in fact i probably thought it better she keep her maiden name so the farang connection was not apparent when dealing with government matters. Doesn't seem to have made any difference though.

My previous wife was HK Chinese, and she kept her maiden name because thats how she was known professionally. No ploblem.

The wife took my name as she didnt like her chinese/Thai one anyway.
Tells me having a chinese name for a thai is a curse

I thought the same thing, plus I'm a bit of a lazy git and couldn't see myself going to the trouble. She seems happy enough, though I hear her from time to time having to spell, and respell the name a few times when giving it to another Thai on the phone.

But if the new farang sees the name "Braithwaite" on an id card it sort of gives the game away.

Marriage with wife registered; she changed her surname to mine but since the King apparently had given the family her Thai surname and for the fact that she had no middle name, she made her Thai surname her new middle name. ID card, Thai Passport, US Passport, house register, and all other appropriate docs reflect the name change. Makes life a lot easier when everything is the same.

That was my first thoughts when the subject came up.

Save yourself the hassle and stay single. Keep your money and live a happy life, shag who ever and whenever.

My wife changed her surname to mine. The main drawback is that no Thai can pronounce it, although she says that's an advantage.

Wife took my name.
All paperwork changed (I.D, passport, tabien baan, cards etc).
No problems whatsoever with the missus having a farang name so far.

Couldn't change to my name quick enough Noodles, just asked her if she wished she'd kept her Thai name or fancied changing it back and she just said 'no', thought i'd save myself a headache though by not asking why.

The nippers will have a double-barrel Thai and English first name too. They can choose which one they prefer when they're older.

That's another thing, when my misses was pregnant and we were thinking about names, i asked her if she wanted to choose a Thai name which i would have been more than happy with as i quite like the name Tittiporn myself or even a Thai middle name, but she was adamant she just wanted a farang name so i got my Mum to send me over one of those baby name books with about 2000 names in, i short listed about 10 and she chose Annabel out of my list and no middle name.

You do not seem to understand that having a farang name can be quite disadvantageous. You get treated differently, some people will take advantage etc etc

so some Thai women do not want those repercussions

being serious about a marriage has nothing to do with bureaucratic name changes, or trust or sincerity

Perhaps you could be a pioneer and take your wife's surname. :)

This was why I started the thread. Care to list a few of these disadvantages? I'm pretty sure there must be a few, there must be a few advantages too, I would imagine. Just trying to find out other peoples experiences.

I'm not married, but probably will be in the not so distant future. She mentioned the name thing yesterday and was very keen on taking my family name as her own, as this is something I have never thought about I decided to make the thread. I have found it quite interesting so far.

Obviously the disadvantages occur in Thailand while in the west a local surname has more advantages.
