Stupidity quotient about the same as in any country. Ranges from imbecilic to brilliant depending on where live.

I had to live in Coventry for four years. Thais are, by comparison, inter-galactic travellers from civilizations so advanced, it's like comparing yeast and humans.

I thought your last thread about Thai generosity was a brilliant way of surreptitiously putting the cat amongst the pigeons, why so obvious with this one though.

More than stupid I would say they are oppressed into stupidity.
This does not deprive them of some primitive cunning in fleecing farang though.

I lived in Coventry for a year, I went in lots of shops and bought lots of things while I was there, I never saw anybody add 14 and 20 together with a calculator though

    Dunno, sometimes I despair.
This morning I commented on how dark my 'ol lady was after we moved here from BKK 4 yrs ago. She said, its natural, BKK has chlorine in the water, Udon doesn't.
Apparently showering in BKK treated water bleaches ones skin.

    quite honestly:
the dumbest, most stubborn, arrogant beings i have ever met in my life.

i can only speak for the isaan thais, and i accept that there must be one or two with a brain in other areas, but in isaan, they seem to TAKE PRIDE IN THEIR STUPIDITY!!!

this was one of the biggest things that influenced my opinion and my present attitude, my generalisations about thai people:
the fkkn unbelievable pride in being stupid and uneducated!!! like it was a desirable state of being to aspire to, to work towards!!!

Yesterday we went to the hospital to see someone 5 floors up, I headed straight for the elevator while they headed for the stairs, I said theres an elevator here, why not use that? they replied "we don't trust that, how does it go up"

    Twice. Just to make sure.

Went to a shop a few days ago after lunch and picked up 2 small sweets, 5 and 7 baht.

The lady had to call out to the lady in the back to add 5 + 7... and together it took them a good 10 seconds of chin rubbing.

Of course this simply down to a shit education, and anybody who never studied maths would probably struggle...

unless they worked in a candy shop and had to add together two single numbers every few minutes of course.

it was similar to when the family stayed with us in BKK, all they wanted to do was spread the mat on the floor and eat somtum, every fvckin day.
I said lets go out somewhere, Ok everybody agreed good idea.
We go on the sky train, a bit of muttering and wifey said, go in the car is better, Why ? I replied, they think the BTS will fall down. maybe it will, I said, but if it does it will drop straight down onto our car below.

    This is interesting...

Is that actual stupidity, or just a complete lack of education and educational opportunities.

Or is stupidity and lack of education the same?

I'd say no, if they were given the education that the average Westerner can look forward to upon birth, it would be a different story.

Working as a cashier and not bothering to learn how to add two simple numbers, as this would be terrifically beneficial to your 12 hour a day job though...

In a nutshell - Its life Jim, but not as we know it.

The plastic bag issue rouses my suspicions though. A 5 baht tube of Polo's do not merit a plastic bag for transportation.

    i have to disagree here:
both my boys started their education in a thai government school, and both of them thunk their thai grandparentsr who had run the mom-an-pop-shop for 30 years were stoopid cos they could not add 12 and 20 without a bloody calculator!

it is all about evolution, i am afraid!
some people were made to till the fields and plant rice and stuff (and pick cotton!!!), and some were made to go on to higher things..............
and then somewhere along the line some prick invented socialism , and screwed up the process for a while, but nature is more powerfull, and things will revert to how they always were and always were meant to be..........

some will pick cotton and some will move on...........................

Yes you are quite correct in what you say.
I can honestly say that I had no idea how hostile and wonderfully amusing things could get over what I considered to be a slight divergence from the thread.
I still haven't figured out the workings of TD let alone the dynamics of the relationships between certain personalities here.
I don't however see how these conflicts can be avoided by tiptoeing around as they seem to flare up from nowhere.
But what do I know, Ive only been here a week and I'm not too bright either.

That about sums it up for me as well.

I've worked with some Thais that would run rings around farang engineers who claim to be similarly trained.

I've also worked with some Thais that you want to headbutt through shear frustration so it all balances out at the end of the day.
