Id be surprised if a load of scientists 40 years on were faking experiments and results that the average Joe in the street doesnt know about.
I believe they went and landed there, I really dont think that the special effects they had available in the 60's would be good enough to convince people for nearly 40 years.
Watch that Ron Howard film Apollo 13 and you can tell its special effects being used. They landed on the moon 30 years before that film was made.
