Saw this doc last week, and was saddened at the end..



Have been thinking about posting a thread, ....to ask if anybody knew Pla

Thought I would check the youtube comments before posting, and it turns out the whole story is bullshit - if you are to believe the comments.

Anyway, I will post it anyway...

Is this documentary somehow made to place the blame on nasty evil "Falang" who pay money for sex, rather than the insanity of their corrupt fucked-up mess of a country?

All bullshit up to 5 min.

This documentary was listed in the multimedia section some time ago. Lots of good documentaries there. The girl sure looks familiar to me but I've never met her. Sad ending indeed.

Film Review For The CBC Documentary "Bangkok Girl" (2005)

^This was fairly interesting reading

The problem with this ' genre ' of documentry is that the people who make them usually use them to express a preconceived opinion they had before they started.

As a general rule they know little about Thailand , are greenhorns who don't speak Thai and selectively sift through the ' facts ' selecting the ones that fit the plot, which will make politically correct viewing for someone in an armchair to tut tut about on the other side of the planet

They nearly always contain a ramble about :

" my preconceived ideas were questioned by what I saw and my opinions were altered by what I discovered "

or words to that effect, which are somehow supposed to hoodwink the viewer into thinking what is being viewed is an adverage representation of what the Thai sex trade is all about....................when of course it isn't.

And is every word of it true ? How the hell should we know. Might well be a few lies thrown in for good measure.

AKA, Ad Hoc. I like all the Thai girl vids and documentaries. As long as they're not all tattooed and slutty.

^^ so any 'good' recommendations for documentaries to watch that don't do that?

Gotta admit that was quite sad at the end ! oh and what a disgrace that drunk english Kunt was no wonder the Thais look down on foreigners when there are Twats like him around !

"There are a million stories in the naked city". ........... but I dont think that was one of them.

It was difficult enough listening to the canadians pathos oozing voiceover, and we all know that thai girls of a certain demographic just love to play up in front of a camera, especially if remunerated for their time, so I would take the whole shebang with a large pinch of salt, especially the bit about her death.

She is an accomplished player in a dangerous game, lacking the smarts to get out.

I flicked through it. The English knob head who works as a teacher in an international school is just the sort of fella I'd like to have teaching my kids.....NOT!

I've never seen a good doco on Thailand.

Just started looking. It take exactly 6 minutes 30 seconds in to get to the "She was different".



Seeing signs for White house, Doll house etc. Thats the old clinton plaza if memory serves me correctly. This must be a good few years old.

Seriously not sure its worth watching any further. Naive farang hits thailand, meets "different bar girl", and for sure its all going to go down hill from there........

The guy says that most girls working the streets are hiv positive or underage girls?

I've never seen an underage girl working the streets in Bangkok in 10 years. Maybe they exist but it's certainly not common.

As for HIV I don't know the official stats if there are any but have read reports saying it's like 1/3 or 1/4.

He also says Bangkok has 6 mill people and Thailand has 50m. The metrop area has around 6m but greater Bangkok is more like 10-12m and the country 60m+.

He also says Thais in the north only earn 60 baht a day on average. That's not true either.

With all these errors in the first 5 mins then it's more than likely the whole doco is bs.

Well, I did finish it, and my bullshit meter was pinging the whole time. The girl was an accomplished pro who completely pulled the wool over the guys eyes.

Telling for me was the bit where she went to the bosses party. She had been working that bar for years, no way she did not know what went on there. Sure she needed rescuing.

The film maker may well have been told she died. Bar girl speak for fuck off and stop bothering me.

i skipped forward a few mins and that woman said everybody finishes school at age 12

This is why the CBC isn't taken seriously. This documentary is 100% staged. Pla is a well taken care of thai girl who lives in europe with her husband(probably the dude who shot the film). Such bullshit to make this when real filmakers are out there trying to do real work. The person who made this "Documentary" should kill himself. If you can't make a good doc on your own find a new line of work and let the talent take over.

As has been pointed out, there are several factual inaccuracies in the documentary, as well as pretty much every stereotype.

"She only work serve drinks" "Mama sick". "Daddy gone"

In the documentary: "I was with her for four days before I noticed half her hand was missing" Really? He was that fucking unobservant???

After six years in the same bar, she just 'happens" to break down and go with a customer for the first time while he is filming....really?????

She just "happens" to die after he goes back? Seriously???

I am aware that a lot of the things the girl says are typical lies, and the guy is not very clued up on how things work in Thailand - though he does say himself a few times that he is not sure whether or not to believe what Pla is telling him - a subtle way of saying he knew she was lying.

The stuff about all Thais only studying until the age of 12 is of course not true, but I took this as how things were in the girls village - and probably what she generally believes is the case , as she lives in the bottom end of the spectrum.

The reason I found the movie interesting is because although she was lying, acting or whatever , that was the life this kid was living and all that she knew.

The only part I am unsure whether to believe or not is if she actually died in the end or not.

My first thoughts were that perhaps she was murdered for letting the guy film things that are not complimentary to Thailand ......

Then I read the comments saying she is alive and well and ( probably) living with the guy who shot the film.

Then somebody posted that he had paid for her funeral..

That is the only part I am unsure on. Whether she actually died or not.
