I'm totally amazed, so are my family and friends.

I quit after 50 and a half years as a confirmed smoker.

Lobeline is a highly efficacious remedy and I've been telling all and sundry about it as well as handing out free plants to those who want one. I bought a few dozen from a local nursery, really cheap in bulk, about Bt 5 (equivalent) each.

I wish I'd got onto it before DD got sick, who knows, it could have helped him.

Another side effect is that my tongue is clean and uncoated now, all the time, and my blood iron levels are high, no need for added iron, and my pH level is at a steady 7, more or less.

I've lost all appetite for sodas, coke etc, just slowly.
Still enjoy a beer or a glass or two of wine, but don't even think about whisky.

Oh, another thing, I didn't get the munchies because I stopped smoking.

Because lobeline hits the dopamine receptors it seems to deal to all addictions and hankerings.

    Yup, the lot.
No addiction to emotions, food, habits, habitual thinking processes of any kind, even sex.

Others, particularly asthma sufferers think it's totally amazing

That's how I did it, Slap.

I cut down to only a few puffs on my pipe a few times a day, and only outside.

I took a chew of lobelia leaf one day and felt a bit weird, then alternated between having a puff or two and having lobelia for about three days then one morning went out on the verandah for my usual puff and a coffee, took a puff or three on the pipe, didn't like it too much, so decided then,
"OK, it's either tobacco or lobelia because I'm feeling weird."

So I packed my pipe and tobacco into a plastic bag and put it away at the bottom of the plastic bag drawer,

I said, "Goodbye old friend, I'll call you, don't call me." and shut the drawer.

I haven't gone to that bag or wanted to since. I just nibble a bit of lobelia if the urge takes me or have a small cup of lobelia tea occassionally.

Try it mate, it really works.

Also, I can go to the pub and have a beer or three, my mates all smoking around and the smell and presence of tobacco doesn't bother me in the least.

    I agree with you there.
Don't set a deadline day to quit either, just stop when it feels right, like I did.

I thought, "I'll try it for a day."

At the end of the day I felt OK and next morning ate a piece of lobelia leaf and didn't smoke again.

I quit using champix. Champix is not a nicotine gum so there's a misunderstanding there. Champix is an anti-depressant that was found to suppress the urge for a cigarette.... completely. I didn't want a cigarette at all when I was using the stuff. It's a powerful drug though and some people have severe side-effects on it so it needs to be used carefully.

It's a 3 month course. Once you have finished the course you do need will power to not start again but at least you have a 3 month head start.

When I quit I had all sorts of side effects caused by nicotine withdrawal. I began coughing up copious amounts of blood as my lungs began repairing themselves. Strangest of all was that my stomach become very distended. It wasn't just 'fat', it was spherical. Some gubbins to do with blood sugar and chemical levels. It returned to its normal beer belly goodness after a while.

    Glad you quit, Moonraker.

I heard of Champix, it has similar effects to lobelia and it contains lobeline.
I haven't suffered the same side effects as you did, maybe its because Champix contains varenicline tartrate and because I did a cutting down phase first where I coughed heaps of crap out.

Champix contains lobelia also, but lobelia sounds much easier to use and has less unpleasant side effects as it contains only the naturally occurring alkaloids found in the lobelia plant.

The active ingredient in Champix is varenicline tartrate. Another ingredient of Champix is lobelia which acts as nicotine by stimulating the nervous system. These harmless herbal extracts purge the nasty effects people link with smoking cessation such as depression and weight gain.
Lung Cancer Symptoms - Champix – a non-nicotine smoking cessation treatment to quit smoking - Lung Cancer Symptoms

Here's another happy convert to lobelia.

Lobelia Inflata aka Indian Tobacco, a new friend
Lobelia Inflata in a cousin of the tobacco plant. It grows wild in the eastern US.
It contains NO nicotine, but does contain a chemical cousin of it: lobeline. Similar to the way kratom works on the opiate receptor, lobeline works on the nicotine receptor, but it's not addictive!

Lobelia is taken as tea, tincture or smoked.

The plant is a powerful muscle relaxant, broncoli dialator (eases breathing), and relaxant

Swim has stuggled with tobacco addiction for years. Recently swim's smoking 2 spliffs (cannabis + tobacco) a day since the summer. (He had quit for a year but fell off the wagon this summer).

Since swim got his hands on Lobelia he hassnt needed tobacco.

    The effects are as followed

Smoked by it's self: relaxation of the muscles. deeper and slower breaths, and someother effects similar to tobacco, however lobelia has no "rush" like tobacco.

When combinded with Cannabis is becomes wonder full: increased energy, very relaxed muscles, a happy feeling, increased sense of smell.... basically makes weed awesome.

Lobelia is known for making other herbal medicins stronger - like weed ;-)

Swim thinks he has found the real cure for his tobacco addiction!! plus a great new ethnogen!

CAUTION: Lobelia, like tobacco also has the potential to be poisonouse. It's well known for its ability to make induce vomiting, lightheadedness etc. When you OD on Lobelia, it's very similar to ODing on tobacco. Swim uses it sparingly, always used in small amounts, never to be abused.

swim bought some lobelia from a local herb store and some from online. The online stuff was crap. the local stuff is great.
good lobelia, when nibbled on or make into tea should make the inside of the mouth and throte tingle as it you were chewing on real tobacco.

In the USA lobelia is banned by the FDA for human consumption (its still legal of course).... the reasoning: they found that it was not effective in treating tobacco addiction.... which is of course total bullshit and probably a result of the tobacco lobby. In Germany is it approved for use in treating tobacco addiction and asthma.

Long story short: Lobelia is going to be a life long friend to swim )

Timely thread forme. I've been off the cigs for a week now. Had crept up to 30 a day and got angry with myself getting out of breath just polishing and messing around on the boat.

Using Niquitin patches. Give them a good scratch/rub when I get craving and it delivers an extra nicotine dose. Been delaying putting patch on each day. Was ok yesterdaywithoutpatch until 4pm, took it off about 10pm after a third of a bottle of brandy.

Good luck to everyone that's trying to lose the habit. Will always miss that morning cig with espresso and juice in the garden, and the one with the first beer of the evening. Just wanna be fit enough to run around on the boat though.

That's just replacing your nicotine source.

Get yourself Alan Carrs 'The Easy Way To Stop Smoking' book. It's very good.

    Or the audio book

The Easy Way (Easyway) To Stop Smoking - Allen Carr (download torrent) - TPB

or the movie. Sorry I can't find the torrent.
Touching on the nicotine thing, Princey.
To be fair, tobacco in it's purist form [untreated] and intake isn't really that controlling or addictive. The traces of nicotine is nominal.
Better chance that those who imbibe modern processed tobacco products are hook on the odd substances and chemical additives that are common place throughout the processed products.

    Spot on.

I was on 3 packs a day until about 9 years ago. I got hypnotised by a fella here in Pattaya, worked for me before you all start saying it's bollocks.

I don't miss coughing up fried eggs and lung butter every morning until I almost puked.

Stick with it, it's worth it.

Stick at it Submaniac ! You won't regret giving fags the heave ho. My Dad died from C.O.P.D, not how any would chose to die , slowly in his case ( 5 years ) . I gave up in 2007 and looking back, thank God for any damage limitation I have done for myself!! Good luck!

Unfortunately I don't think it works for me. It does not have a 100% success ration. Those who I spoke to that it worked on reported that they lost their desire to smoke, and when they tried, it made them sick. When you're using it you're allowed to smoke. I ended up still smoking the same amount as before. And now I'm using the nicotine gum and electronic cigarettes, meaning that there's still a nicotine desire for me (that the nicotine neuro receptors aren't blocked). I am still holding in there and not smoking, though. Just wished the Chantix/Champix worked for me.

Good on you, but I say don't use anything.
Just be hard on youself, or good to yourself, depending how you look at it.
just be determined to be determined.
make the decision that it is the enemy and you will win.
    Stick to it, good luck.

One benefit I never considered was how good I feel about myself for being able to do it.

Thank you once again for the encouragement koojo and storekeeper. I am still hanging in there and no cigarette yet. I am still using my nicotine crutches, but honestly I don't think I would be too pleasant to be around without them. First step is just to stop smoking and then I can ween myself off my crutches.

I went with the electronic smokes that I had brought back from blighty with me. They worked fine until I ran out, and then just had one smoke...which led to another....and because I was smoking the e-cig endlessly I ended up smoking double the amount I was before.

Time to jack it in - tomorrow is the day.

    Jeez, you too !
I gave it up in 1978 ( age 23) and haven't looked back. Can't stand the smell nowadays. Consider the alternative....a slight case of death. Dirtydog's demise was right there in front of us all.

I have made a personal study of the phenomenon of addiction. Permit me to say a few words:
It gets easier as time goes on, but the real challenge is when you are in situations or with people from your past, in which you smoked. Then your mind starts to rationalize and say "why not just ONE" ??
THAT's when you need to be very strict with yourself. And you have to REMEMBER to BE strict with yourself in those situations. The most difficult time is when you're drinking, because alcohol helps people to rationalize.

In the meantime, reward yourself with other little indulgences......whatever it is you fancy.....coffee, chocolate, a weekend away......and consciously tell yourself that these things are your reward to yourself for giving up.
Continually remind yourself that an early death (possibly in a horrid way) is the most probable alternative.

Go for it, Submaniac and Pseudolus ! We're all here supporting you. And many of us know what a battle it is.

Alright mate you can do it!!! It'll save you money and your health. Hey I'm suffering too here. And unlike you I'm even a lowly non-Brit, and even i am managing to do it! go pseudolus go! You can do it. You can even tell yourself it's not permanent and just a holiday from the cigarettes. Take one final morning dump with a cigarette and get on with it.

And thanks for the encouragement Latindancer.
