Yep. Any change is of little consequence and transient. Sure bigger shops, vehicles, fashion changes, TVs and the like but fundamentally the same as when I first set foot in the country, 40 plus years ago.
Hmmmm..... beg to differ on one point. I find driving in Issan (namely Udon bloody Thani) probably about the most dangerous place to drive in Thailand now. Why? Because a few years ago someone let village ox-cart drivers loose with damn great pick-up trucks and forgot to tell them how to drive 'em, and the rest of the populace how to avoid 'em! Jeez, you drive behind anyone in Issan and he's driving the same speed as he would his trusty old ox-cart, but then you see him preparing to do something totally brain dead daft, you think for sure he's gonna correct himself because he's driving at Kwai miles per hour but no........ he still goes ahead and does it!
Honestly, there's a reason why the Thai uber rich want to keep the peasants down, and in Issan it aint hard to see why!

Good point. I hire an ex ox cart driver to drive my car. No license (except the one I bought for him) but has an uncanny ability to anticipate the maneuvers of his fellow ox cart jockeys.

A practical skill that would certainly get by those snotty hiso city-slickers.
