Nathan Hales wins absolutely unreal gold with Olympic trap shooting record

On a day when temperatures soared to the mid-30s at Paris 2024, Great Britains Nathan Hales was cool as a cucumber as he set an Olympic record in the mens Olympic trap competition, winning Team GBs third gold medal of the Games.

Hales broke down in tears on the podium as the British national anthem played, the emotions he had so masterfully controlled during the competition spilling forth.

Being in this position is something I have dreamed of since I was a kid, since I started shooting with my family, he said. It was always was a dream of mine, so to be able to come here and actually see it through to the end is absolutely unreal.

The 28-year-old from Chatham, Kent, claimed an Olympic record of 48 out of 50 to beat the silver medallist, Qi Ying of China, by four shots at the shooting venue in Chateauroux, capital city of the French department of Indre. Jean Pierre Brol Crdenas took bronze, Guatemalas second Olympic medal in its history.

McKeown wins 100m backstroke gold with Olympic record

What an electric swim! American Regan Smith and Canadian Kylie Masse led at 50m but Australias Kaylee McKeown had a phenomenal last 50m to win.

McKeown touched the wall in an Olympic record time of 57.33 seconds, humbling Smith by 0.33 seconds as another American, Katharine Berkoff, took bronze at La Defense Arena.

The 23-year-old McKeown became Australia's first woman to win Olympic backstroke gold at Tokyo and three years later she is the first to go back-to-back.

Australias Kaylee McKeown won gold in the womens 100-meter backstroke Tuesday in an incredible finish.

McKeown and Americans Regan Smith and Katharine Berkoff were neck and neck after the turn, leaping off the wall at nearly the exact same time. Over the final 30 meters or so, McKeown finally pulled the slightest bit ahead, setting an Olympic record by finishing in 57.33 seconds.

Smith took silver with a 57.66-second race, while Berkoff was right behind her, ending up at 57.98 seconds.

Some other highlights from day 4..........

Over to the women’s judo now as we have another gold medal confirmed. In the -63kg final Slovenia’s Andreja Leski, who beat the defending champion Clarisse Agbgnnou in the semis, has won gold after beating Mexico’s Prisca Awiti Alcaraz. France’s Agbgnnou won bronze.

    ___________

Gold for China in the table tennis mixed doubles

Table tennis mixed doubles: North Korea’s Kim Kum Yong and Ri Jong Sik put up a brave fight here, but China continued their virtual stranglehold on table tennis medals in Olympic history with Wang Chuqin and Sun Yingsha taking gold. They won 11-6 7-11 11-8 11-5 7-11 11-8.

It is the 33rd gold China has won in table tennis since it was introduced in 1988. The only other nations to ever win a gold in the sport are South Korea on three occasions and Japan and Sweden once each.

    _________

Women’s BMX freestyle: it is Hannah Roberts of the USA who has finished top of the pile in qualifying here, with a score of 91.45. However Team GB’s defending gold medallist Charlotte Worthington has failed to make the cut and is one of the three riders eliminated. Sun Jiaqi and Deng Yawen of China qualified second and third, with Perris Benegas of the US in fourth. The final is tomorrow afternoon in Paris.

    ____________

Beach volleyball: Partain and Benesh earn first Olympic win

USA's Miles Partain and Andy Benesh bounced back from their first match loss to Cuba and won against Morocco in straight sets Tuesday.

After comfortably winning their first set, the pair found the second more challenging. Morocco tied it up at 21-21 after officials ruled that Benesh touched the net during a block, extending the match until the Americans won with their 28th point.

Partain, 22, and Benesh, 29, make up the youngest U.S. Olympic beach volleyball team ever. They will play their next preliminary match on Thursday against Brazil.

What to watch on Day 5 at Paris 2024

There are a total of 18 medal events taking place on the fifth full day of competition at Paris 2024, Wednesday 31 July.

Katie Ledecky's dominance in the women's 1500m free looks to continue in the pool as the U.S. swimmer looks for her second straight gold medal (9:04pm) in this still relatively new event at the Olympic level – she owns the 19 fastest times of all-time, and could make the top 20 entirely her own in Paris.

That's one of just five finals in swimming on an exciting night at the Paris La Dfense Arena.

Here are the day's other top picks:

Artistic gymnastics - Hashimoto and Zhang renew head-to-head in men's final
For the first time at an Olympic Games, Hashimoto Daiki of Japan and Chinese gymnast Zhang Boheng will get to face off against each other in the men's individual all-around final (from 5:30pm).

In the last three years the pair have shared a closely fought, respectful rivalry, stretching from the World Artistic Gymnastics Championships to the World University Games and now they get to bring it to the Olympic Games.

Zhang narrowly beat Hashimoto to the world title in 2021; they swapped positions in 2022 with the Japanese gymnast taking gold and Zhang silver. However, in 2023, Hashimoto withdrew from the World University Games after a hard fall on pommel horse as Zhang won; then Zhang was assigned to the Asian Games on home soil in Hangzhou which he won, while Hashimoto retained his world title the week after in Antwerp as the pair did not face each other.

Hashimoto struggled in qualifying, but helped Japan pip People's Republic of China in the men's team final on Monday. This is the match-up to watch.

Swimming - 100m free finals on big night in pool
In addition to Ledecky, it's a big night at the Paris La Dfense Arena as swimming's blue riband events, the women's 100m freestyle (8:30pm) and men's 100m freestyle (10:15pm), book-end the evening's finals.

The men's 100m free world record was broken in February at an out-of-season World Championships in Doha by China's Pan Zhanle, while European record holder David Popovici of Romania will want to take it back. The 2023 world champion Kyle Chalmers of Australia is also in the mix. However, reigning champion Caeleb Dressel will not take part, having finished outside the top two at the U.S. trials.

Meanwhile, Tokyo 2020 silver medallist Siobhn Haughey of Hong Kong, China and current world champion Marrit Steenbergen of Netherlands are among the top names in the women's event. The other two Tokyo medallists, Australia's Emma McKeon and Cate Campbell, have not qualified in the event this year.

Great Britain women’s quad find brilliant finish to strike rowing gold

Great Britain announced their return to rowing’s summit with a stunning gold medal in the women’s quadruple sculls, pipping the Netherlands by 0.15 seconds after a breathtaking pursuit to the line.

China gold, GB bronze in women's 10m synchro diving

Women’s diving: The Chinese have won, because of course they have as they are incredible at this discipline. However, there is delight for Team GB’s Andrea Spendolini-Sireix and Lois Toulson, who hug each other with delight when an insufficiently decent last effort from the Americans means they are guaranteed the bronze medal. North Korea take the silver.

Women's soccer: Canadas loses appeal on 6-point penalty amid spying scandal

Canada's appeal of a 6-point deduction handed to its women's soccer team has been rejected by the Court of Arbitration for Sport [CAS].

Defending gold medalist Canada was hit with the penalty in the pool stage of the Olympic women's soccer tournament after New Zealand, who Canada played in its opening match, said it had spotted a drone flying over one of its training sessions. After those allegations came to light, Canada Soccer said it had become aware of further incidents of spying pre-dating the Paris Olympics.

Head coach Bev Priestman and two other members of the coaching staff were suspended from their positions by Canada Soccer and banned from all soccer-related activity for a year by soccer's governing body FIFA in the aftermath of the scandal.

Canada Soccer appealed to CAS saying the points deduction was disproportionate given it unfairly punishes the athletes for actions they had no part in and goes far beyond restoring fairness to the match against New Zealand. However, that appeal has now been dismissed, and the points deduction will remain in place.

Canada has won both of its games at the Olympics but sits in third in Group A with zero points due to the deduction. It could still progress to the knockout rounds if it beats Colombia in their final pool game in Nice at 3 p.m. ET.

Gymnast-turned-shooter wins Guatemala's first Olympic gold

Guatemala's Adriana Ruano made history in more ways than one.

After a spinal injury ended Ruano's career as a gymnast, she came back in shooting and won the first gold medal in her country's history. She also set a new Olympic record in women's trap, hitting 45 out of 50 shots.

Basketball: USA cruises to win vs. South Sudan

After a tense matchup during an exhibition, USA had a much easier time with South Sudan on Wednesday, winning 103-86 to move to 2-0 in group play.

After opening up a double-digit lead early in the second quarter, the United States never let South Sudan get closer than 10 points the rest of the way. The lineups were a little bit different than the opener vs. Serbia: Anthony Davis started in place of Joel Embiid, who didn’t play. Jayson Tatum also started after not appearing against Serbia, and Tyrese Haliburton saw his first action of the Olympics as well.

Bam Adebayo led the U.S. with 18 points. Kevin Durant and LeBron James added 12 and 14, respectively.

The States will wrap up group play on Saturday vs. Puerto Rico.

Soccer: U.S. to play Japan in knockouts; Germany advances

Australia failed to overcome the two-goal deficit at the end of the match, despite a last-minute rally that raised the score to 2-1.

Team USA will play Japan in the quarterfinals on Saturday. This is the second time the women's team has won all of its group matches at the Olympics, with the only other time being when it took gold in 2012.

The U.S. women's national soccer team has not placed first at the Olympics in the years since.

Germany has also advanced into the knockouts after defeating Zambia 4-1. The opponent for that match has yet to be determined.

    Live group standings:
    7 USA
    6 Germany
    4 Australia
    0 Zambia

USAs Katie Ledecky makes Olympic history with gold in 1500m freestyle

Katie Ledecky has become the first female swimmer to win gold medals at four different Olympics after retaining her title in the womens 1500m freestyle with another commanding performance on Wednesday night.

The 27-year-old American, widely regarded as the greatest female distance swimmer of all time, touched first in 15min and 30.02sec, an Olympic record, before a boisterous crowd in the Paris suburbs. Frances Anastasiya Kirpichnikova claimed the silver (15 : 40 . 35), while third place went to Germanys Isabel Gose (15 : 41 . 16). The only other swimmer to break 16 minutes was Simona Quadarella of Italy (15:44.05), who faded in a hard-fought duel for the bronze.

Australian paddler Jess Fox wins women's C1 canoe slalom

Womens canoe slalom: Satkova is the final challenger. But she pings in to gate 2 and gets a penalty. That is game over. She loses it at gate 8, too. A bad start for Satkova and theres no way back. She ploughs on but it all falls apart and she gets over the line in deflated fashion with 114.22.

Jess Fox wins her second gold of Paris 2024

Fox first, Lilik second and Leibfarth third. A surprising podium for pretty much everyone.

Canoe slalom: Underdog Evy Leibfarth wins bronze for USA

The U.S. did not enter Paris with high hopes for a canoe slalom medal. That all changed when 20-year-old Evy Leibfarth delivered an astonishing run in the women's single canoe finals. She watched in suspense as the remaining finalists took their turn, then jumped in excitement when she clinched the bronze.

Leibfarth had barely qualified for the final with the twelfth fastest time of the semis, but she beat that time by almost 8 seconds in the final for a 109.95 run. Leibfarth also competed in the single kayak event but didn't make it to the finals.

Four-time Olympic medalist Jessica Fox dominated the race for her straight straight gold.

This is history were seeing as he closes in and he wins his second gold medal of the evening! Marchand has to settle for the Olympic record, not the world thatll come another time. The remaining day 5 highlights……..

Sarah Sjöström wins the women's 100m freestyle

O’Callaghan is in lane three, it’s Walsh who starts well in lane eight. Huske has the lead as we close in, but it’s Sarah Sjöström who takes gold!

    ___________

Shinnosuke Oka wins the men's all-round gymnastics final

Zhang Boheng finishes up, cueing the anxious wait for the final results … my word it’s nervy. The audience claps away …. and it’s Oka who is the all-round champion. The 20-year-old has gold with 86.832, Boheng trails with 86.599. Xiao Ruoteng has bronze with 86.364.

    __________

BMX freestyle: The women’s competition has just concluded and China’s Deng Yawen has won the gold medal ahead of USA’s Perris Benegas and Australia’s Natalya Diehm.

Tokyo 2020 British gold medalist Charlotte Worthington failed to qualify for the final this time around, while the USA’s Hannah Roberts has come up short in her second successive Olympics after failing to deliver on her final run while still in contention for the gold.

BMX Freestyle: Perris Benegas takes silver for Team USA, but heartbreak for Hannah Roberts

After falling during a risky front flip in her first run, Team USA's gold medal favorite Hannah Roberts was under immense pressure to nail her second attempt. Her second run went wrong from the star with her feet slipping from the pedals during her first trick to cap off a nightmare afternoon for the 22-year-old.

However, there was a medal for Team USA as Roberts' teammate Perris Banegas took home silver with a big second run to earn a score of 90.70.

Roberts was the big favorite to win gold in the women's BMX freestyle having taken five of the last seven world championship titles and the inaugural X Games title in this discipline in June. The top step of the podium eluded her in Tokyo after rival Charlotte Worthington of Britain put up a huge score to snatch gold.

Roberts looked distraught here, throwing her bike down in frustration after failing to complete her second run.

China’s Deng Yawen took gold with an impressive score of 92.60.

Earlier in practice, a collision with another rider sent Roberts tumbling down one of the Place de la Concorde ramps.

Yang wins gold in women’s 20km race walk

The world record holder is an Olympic champion for the first time! It was an enthralling last 10km but Jiayu Yang’s quick start and steady pace throughout was what won her this race. She really dug deep with her fastest lap being her last despite looking like she was in a lot of pain.

Spain’s Mar[at]a Pérez takes silver and Jemima Montag comfortably takes third, becoming the first Australian to medal in this event since 2004.

Men’s 20km race walk: Pintado celebrates his gold with a Cristiano Ronaldo SIIIIUUU celebration and is able to call his family back home in Ecuador right as he crosses the finish line.

Caio Bonfim from Brazil takes silver and Álvaro Mart[at]n takes bronze.

All three athletes on the podium take home their very first Olympic medal.
