Chloe Dygert takes bronze in road time trial after spill

Chloe Dygert has won bronze in the women's individual time trial.

Dygert has recently come off a devastating injury in 2020, going off the guard rail at the time. She recently overcame an Achilles heel injury this year.

At the first time check, Dygert was looking like a contender for gold, but after wiping out lost ground. Australia's Grace Brown and Great Britain's Anna Henderson took gold and silver, respectively.

This is Dygert’s third Olympic medal and first in road cycling. She has two Olympic medals in track cycling. Dygert is the second American woman to win an Olympic medal in both road and track cycling.

As for gold medalist Grace Brown from Australia, this is her first Olympic medal. She finished fourth in this event in Tokyo.

Brown finished 1:31.59 ahead of the silver medalist, Anna Henderson.

This is the United States’ 6th medal in the women’s individual time trial event, the most in Olympic history.

The other American in the race was Taylor Knibb from Washington, D.C., who finished in 19th place.

    Sad news.

Samoa's boxing coach died at the Paris Olympics village after the 60-year-old had a cardiac arrest, officials said on Saturday.Governing body the IBA sent its "heartfelt condolences to the family, friends and colleagues" of Lionel Elika Fatupaito following his sudden death on Friday, the day of the opening ceremony.
He was treated by emergency services but they were unable to save him, according to the local prosecutor's office, which said he died of "natural causes".

Ledecky wins bronze in women's 400-meter freestyle, Australia's Titmus takes gold

Ledecky has won the bronze in the women's 400-meter free event, in perhaps the most anticipated swimming event of the Paris Games.

She won gold in the same event in Rio and silver in Tokyo. It's her third Olympic medal in the event

Ledecky faced world-record holder and defending gold medal champion Ariarne Titmus from Australia, who earned the gold today. Summer McIntosh from Canada won silver.

Ledecky should have a few more chances to win medals in Paris as she aims to tie, or beat, the record for most medals won by an American woman, which currently sits at 12.

    The day is not over

Canadian women's soccer docked, coaches suspended over drone spying scandal

Soccer's governing body announced Saturday it is docking six points from the Canadian women's soccer team at the Paris Olympics and suspending its head coach and two others for a year over a drone spying scandal.

Why it matters: The incident had already cast a shadow over Canada, the defending gold medalists from Tokyo, and the stiff penalty puts a major dent in the team's hope for a repeat gold in Paris.

    • FIFA said it was banning head coach Bev Priestman, assistant coach Jasmine Mander and staffer Joseph Lombardi for one year.

Zoom in: Soccer Canada was also fined 200,000 Swiss Francs.

    • But the stiffest penalty was the deduction of six points from the group play total of the Canadian team, a move that makes it unlikely for the team to advance to the medal round.
    • Canada won its first match against New Zealand but now faces the prospect of needing to win all three matches to finish with three points — and even that might not be enough to advance.

Catch-up quick: A Canadian soccer official was caught using a drone to spy on the New Zealand women's team practice.

    • Soccer Canada had already sent Priestman home from Paris.
    • The head of Canada soccer has acknowledged the drone use was not limited to the women's team or to Paris.

What they're saying: FIFA said in a statement that each of the suspended soccer officials were "responsible for offensive behavior and violation of the principles of fair play."

Yes, but: Canada could appeal FIFA's decision to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

"Canada Soccer CEO Kevin Blue revealed that Canada used drones to attempt to spy on opponents at previous major events, including by the men’s national team at this month’s Copa America."

    Wow.

More fallout to come on this, methinks.

USA Surfing's top men advance at potent Tahitian break

USA Surfing's top men, John John Florence and Griffin Colapinto ย— who happen to be the No. 1 and No. 2 world championship tour riders ย— advanced to round 3 by winning their respective heats.

Under the Olympics surfing competition framework, the second-place riders in each three-person heat will advance to round 2. Florence used his champion's timing and balance to make Teahupo'o's overhead barrels work in his favor.

He had the highest-scoring heat of the competition so far.

There were few surprises on Saturday as Brazil's own boardriding titans, defending world champion Felipe Toledo and former champ Gabriel Medina, advanced. Toledo, however, will have to fight in round 2 after he was beat by Peru's Alonso Correa.

Mexico's Alan Cleland, No. 2 on the World Qualifying Series, surfing's minor leagues, in 2023-'24, advanced to round 2.

Australia's Ethan Ewing and Tyler Wright through in Olympic surfing

Ethan Ewing has shown no fear on his return to the same waves that broke his back last year, qualifying for the third round of Olympic surfing.

The Queenslander fractured two vertebrae in 2023 at the feared Teahupo’o break in Tahiti, which as part of French Polynesia is hosting surfing for the Paris Games.

He had no such problems on Saturday (early Sunday AEST), topping a low-scoring heat to reach the last 16.

Joining him in round three is two-time world champion Tyler Wright, who survived mighty surf to win her heat.

Ewing caught the first wave of the Olympics after being drawn in the first heat, disappearing in a typical Teahupo’o barrel for a score of 7.33.

He needed to score late points to win the heat and did so with just 82 seconds left, his 2.57 enough to post 9.90 – the lowest winning score of the men’s field.

“I got a really good wave first up. It set up the heat,” Ewing said.

“I’m really happy to get that first win and skip into the next round.”

Australia begin Olympic basketball campaign with win over Spain

Australia’s men enjoyed an encouraging start to their Olympic basketball campaign with a 92-80 win over Spain in a feisty encounter that threatened to boil over at the Pierre Mauroy Stadium in Lille.

Led by Jock Landale with 20 points, veteran Patty Mills (19) and Josh Giddey (17), the Boomers started strongly to get one over their rivals in Group A, which also contains Canada and Greece and has been dubbed the ‘group of death’.

Giddey gave the Chicago Bulls a glimpse of what they are getting next NBA season as he also weighed in with eight rebounds and eight assists. But tempers flared in the first quarter when Josh Green and Usman Garuba exchanged words before a bit of push and shove prompted a number of Australian players to rush in.

“It is part of basketball,” Green said. “It’s about setting a tone. It’s not like I’m meaning to start anything. The guys need stuff to get going in games. It gets people fired up. Basketball is a big momentum game, so finding however I can bring momentum is what I’m going to try to do.”

The Boomers next meet Canada on Tuesday.

Spain’s dream team of Alcaraz and Nadal dig deep to advance in Olympic doubles

When a 12-year-old Carlos Alcaraz was asked to name his favourite tennis player, his answer was not what many would have expected. During his childhood, Alcaraz saw himself most in Roger Federer’s high-octane, all-court attacking style, the brand of tennis that he aspired to copy.

In recent years, that answer has changed. With age, it seems, Alcaraz has come to truly understand the undeniable influence Rafael Nadal has had over his career and of so many around him.

Having already experienced the ecstasy of defeating his idol in battle, this time Spain’s past and future greats converged on the same side of the court. Despite Nadal’s lack of matches and Alcaraz’s unfamiliarity with doubles, the Spaniards thrived under pressure in the decisive moments as they toppled Andr้s Molteni and Maximo Gonzalez, the sixth seeds from Argentina, to reach the second round of the Olympics with a 7-6 (4), 6-4 win.

“It was a dream come true, honestly,” said Alcaraz. “I dreamed about playing my debut in the Olympic Games, but playing with Rafa it was even more special. I’m really happy about the level we played, I’m really happy to give us the chance to keep going, to play another round. I think our level is good enough to believe and hopefully keep going.”

“Yesterday was a super emotional moment for me too,” said Nadal “I can’t thank enough Paris and France to give me that honour. I’m still with the emotions very high, just enjoying every single moment and let’s see what’s going on.”

Earlier, Novak Djokovic reached the second round with an easy 6-0, 6-1 win over Matthew Ebden, an Australian doubles specialist, as all outdoor matches were postponed due to rain. Nadal is scheduled to face Marton Fucsovics on Sunday afternoon, and a win would set up a 60th meeting between Djokovic and Nadal in the second round.

Biles flirts with perfection in Olympic return

Simone Biles anchored the U.S. beam effort with a near-flawless routine and not a wobble in sight. She earned a huge 14.733 and will expect to join Sunisa Lee in the beam finals.

That's one of the best routines she has ever done in competition.

^She gets a lot of attention and rightly so........

Biles' all-around score is best in this cycle

Simone Biles scored 59.566 in qualifying, a score that would have won the last two world championships.

According to the Gymternet website, it is the worldย’s best all-around score in international competition in this Olympic cycle. Biles has scored higher domestically.

    Team USA's expected finalists

There are still three more subdivisions in this qualification round, but the U.S. women are on track to have representatives in each event final.

Simone Biles is currently in eighth on bars, so her place there isn't guaranteed, but it's unlikely that anyone bumps Suni Lee out of the final. The all-around, vault, beam and floor finalists are in secure positions.

All-Around: Simone Biles and Suni Lee

Vault: Simone Biles and Jade Carey

Bars: Suni Lee and Simone Biles

Beam: Simone Biles and Suni Lee

Floor: Simone Biles and Jordan Chiles

    __________

    Team USA cruises to first

As expected, the U.S. women dominated the qualification round. After the second of five subdivisions, they scored a 172.296, which is more than five points over Italy, China and Great Britain.

No other teams have the difficulty required to match that, so Team USA is expected to enter Tuesday's team final in first.

Team USA impress in surfing qualifiers in stunning Tahiti

The surfing events got underway yesterday in the stunning surroundings of Teahupo'o in Tahiti, one of the world's most famous surfing spots, and the Team USA surfers certainly impressed.

All three of Team USA's female surfers advanced directly to round 3 with Caroline Marks getting the biggest score of the day. She will be joined by defending gold medalist Carissa Moore and Caitlin Summers.

The U.S. men were equally as impressive with John John Florence and Griffin Colapinto getting the day's two biggest scores.
